Principal's Message
Dear Forest Hills Friends and Families,
Teachers have sent out the links to Conferences on Oct 28th - 29th, which will be in-person or Zoom (parent choice). We will have you indicate on the SignUp Genius whether you will be in-person or on Zoom. Conferences will only be on those two days. Teachers will not be making appointments for dates and times outside of what is on the SignUp Genius. This also means that there is only one sign up slot per student. If you have any issues with signing up please contact the office and they will be happy to assist.
We look forward to seeing you either way!
Thanks again and have a wonderful weekend.
Sincerely,
Jim Mangan, Principal
PE Request
We are off to a great start in PE this year! I LOVE being back in person with all the students this year.
We have had several trips and falls from students in rain boots, sandals, etc. Please have your student bring a CLEAN PAIR of PE shoes that they can leave at school. It is much safer and will also help keep the gym floor clean!
Thank you!

LAKE OSWEGO SCHOOL BOND MEASURE INFORMATION:
Dear Forest Hills Community,
What a great start to the school year. I have been amazed with our Falcon community and all we have accomplished in these first few weeks back in school.
I wanted to share with you information about the upcoming Lake Oswego School Bond measure on the November 2021 ballot.
A school bond is how school districts in Oregon typically fund major capital construction upgrades, updates and/or replacements of buildings. LOSD is on track to complete all capital projects promised in our 2017 bond measure -- on time and on budget. We are now turning our attention to the second phase of the three-part construction and capital improvement program.
The proposed Lake Oswego School Bond, if passed, would modernize classrooms, protect our capital investments, prioritize safety and security, and improve accessibility at all of our schools. It would also rebuild River Grove Elementary and Lake Oswego Junior High to relieve capacity and support best practices in education. If approved, property owners would pay an additional $0.92/$1,000 of assessed value annually. For the median home assessed value of $420,000 that is approximately $385 per year.
What would the bond do here at Forest Hills, if the measure passes?
Built in 1949
- Address priority capital repairs
- Replace broadloom and tile carpet
- Upgrade mechanical systems for comfort and efficiency
- Improve accessibility
- Make accessibility improvements to walkways, restrooms, parking lots, gardens, and entrances to ensure all students, staff, and community members have access to public building
- Update playground to be more accessible
- Safe, secure campuses
- Update fire alarm system
- Replace building door hardware
- Install additional cameras for sight improvement and video monitoring
- Update campus communication broadcast systems
- Modernize classrooms
- Continue technology infrastructure updates
- Replace outdated computers
You can find more information, including a complete project list and Frequently Asked Questions, online at www.LakeOswegoSchoolBond.org.
Counselor Corner
Dearest Forest Hills Families,
This month, we are exploring the social-emotional skill of Empathy. Empathy is an important trait for healthy relationships and being in community with others. There is always a need for Empathy in our world and it can start at home and in our schools.
The definition of Empathy that we will be using is: the ability to understand and connect to the feelings of another. We are focusing on a few key pieces of Empathy such as knowing how we feel and having the language to describe those feelings, understanding how others are feeling and listening well to others so we can understand different perspectives and connect in more meaningful ways. We will explore ways that empathy can help us care for and stand up with, and for, others in our communities. We will celebrate what makes us different and the things that we share.
For your reference, here are links for extension activities if you would like to explore Empathy further as a family:

OCTOBER IS DYSLEXIA AWARENESS MONTH
What are the signs of Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a common condition that affects the way the brain processes written and spoken language. It can be associated with trouble reading, but it also can affect writing, spelling and even speaking. Many children have one or two of these issues on occasion. But kids with dyslexia have several of these issues, and they don’t go away.
Here are some signs to look for:
Preschool, Kindergarten, & First Grade:
Difficulties:
Difficulty learning (and remembering) the names of letters in the alphabet
Seems unable to recognize letters in his/her own name
Mispronounces familiar words; persistent “baby talk”
Trouble learning common nursery rhymes
Doesn’t recognize rhyming patterns like cat, bat, rat
A family history of reading and/or spelling difficulties (dyslexia often runs in families)
Reading errors that show no connection to the sounds of the letters on the page—will say “puppy” instead of the written word “dog” on a page with a picture of a dog
Does not understand that words come apart
Cannot sound out even simple words like cat, map, nap
Does not associate letters with sounds, such as the letter b with the “b” sound
Complains about how hard reading is; “disappears” when it is time to read
A history of reading problems in parents or siblings
Strengths
Curiosity
Great imagination
Ability to figure things out; gets the gist of things
Eager embrace of new ideas
A good understanding of new concepts
Surprising maturity
A larger vocabulary than typical for age group
Enjoys solving puzzles
Talent for building models
Excellent comprehension of stories read or told to him
Second Grade through High School:
Reading
Very slow in acquiring reading skills. Reading is slow and awkward
Trouble reading unfamiliar words, often making wild guesses because cannot sound out the word
Has a tough time sounding out unfamiliar words
Avoids reading out loud
Gets tripped up by word problems in math
School and Life
Trouble remembering dates, names, telephone numbers, random lists
Struggles to finish tests on time
Extreme difficulty learning a foreign language
Poor spelling
Messy handwriting
Low self-esteem that may not be immediately visible
Speaking
Searches for a specific word and ends up using vague language, such as “stuff” or “thing,” without naming the object
Pauses, hesitates, and/or uses lots of “um’s” when speaking
Confuses words that sound alike, such as saying “tornado” for “volcano,” substituting “lotion” for “ocean”
Mispronunciation of long, unfamiliar or complicated words
Seems to need extra time to respond to questions
Strengths
Excellent thinking skills: conceptualization, reasoning, imagination, abstraction
Learning that is accomplished best through meaning rather than rote memorization
Ability to get the “big picture”
A high level of understanding of what is read to him/her/they
The ability to read and to understand at a high level overlearned (or highly practiced) words in a special area of interest
Improvement as an area of interest becomes more specialized and focused—and a miniature vocabulary is developed that allows for reading in that subject area
A surprisingly sophisticated listening vocabulary
Excels in areas not dependent on reading, such as math, computers and visual arts, or in more conceptual (versus fact-driven) subjects, including philosophy, biology, social studies, neuroscience and creative writing
