A Note from Ms. Owens
This week, I find that my heart is sad and weary. This is not because of our school building being closed, because of our anxiety over COVID-19, or because I'm concerned about what school will look like in the fall. All of those topics are hard things, and they have certainly been the focus of my energy these last ten weeks. But the death of George Floyd has shaken me and our nation.
Earlier this week, as I was scrolling through my Facebook feed, I read a post from one of my former Queen of Peace students. Her post made me realize I was burying myself in the busy-ness of closing out the school year so I could avoid the news. Since that evening, I find my mind consistently returning to the question of what I can do. This has reminded me that I am, at my core, an educator and a life-long learner. And while I am no longer in the classroom, I have an obligation to continue to keep learning by reading books that give me insights into other peoples' experiences, by participating in dialogues with people whose views are different from my own, and by letting myself be uncomfortable with hard topics.
St. Catherine of Alexandria is a school community rooted in deeply in our faith. In bringing the work of education and faith together, we will continue to educate ourselves and our students so we can learn to hear perspectives that are different from our own, to take actions for social justice anchored in the gospel values, and to find solace and strength in our relationship with God who loves us unconditionally.
Please pray for our nation, for our communities, for our brothers and sisters who are tired and broken, for our brothers and sisters working to keep us safe, and for own sorrows. We are all - each and every one of us - beloved children of God.
Peace,
Kristine Owens
