October @ Your BRHS Library

Events and services for faculty and students

Banned Books Week is Sept.30-Oct. 6

Stop by the library and see the crime scene display in honor of the American Library Association's 30th year celebration of Banned Books Week. There will be information on the daily broadcast about this week in order to educate students about censorship and their first amendment rights in relation to books and libraries. This is a great week to integrate this into a history or literature lesson. For more information go to http://www.ala.org/advocacy/banned/bannedbooksweek/

Nooks Are Circulating!

Students are excited about checking out Nooks. We have 10 Simple Touch e-readers available for checkout with parent permission. Students may check out the device for two weeks and must return the nook on time in order to check one out again. We also have 10 Color Nooks which will stay in the library for recreational reading. We still are compiling titles to put on these, but we have a few free magazines loaded that have come with our print subscriptions. Magazines are difficult to order due to the subscription nature and the fact that Barnes and Noble cannot accept P. O.s for magazines. We are considering comic books, manga and even apps that would be appropriate for reading during short blocks of time. We welcome your suggestions. Visit our Media Center webpage and click on Nooks for Simple Touch titles and the Parent Permission form.

E-Books and Common Core Content: Your Input is Needed!

The district has recently connected all school libraries to FollettShelf, a digital e-book service which is supported by the same company that supports our digital catalog. We currently do not have e-book titles (other than the Nooks) but are looking at them for informational text and common core content, especially those with unlimited access. You can login to Titlewave.com with generic username and password blueridgehigh to see digital titles and other resources you may want to request. If you need help, just let us know. We have special federal funds that must be spent this fall, so please give us your input.

How Can We Help?

This year we are attending department meetings each month to communicate ideas and offer assistance in areas that we can support the classroom teacher and students. If you need us to gather books, resources, locate websites, we will be happy to accommodate you as long as you give us a few days (a week is great) notice. We also can help with research and provide assistance with DISCUS databases. Even if it is last minute, please don't hesitate to ask and we will do what we can to help you.

Teen Read Week is October 14-20: BRHS Will Celebrate October 21-27

The Media Center will celebrate TRW a week later due to our professional development days. We have lots of fun in store for students with a teacher favorite book contest (students must guess who the teacher is in the photo), the annual "I got caught reading" passes that teachers give to students (they turn in to us for candy), and other activities.

Attention New Teachers

Do you have a streamline account? If not, stop by the library and we will help you set one up. This will link you to Discovery Education videos and numerous educational resources including lesson plans, quizzes, standards and more. If you had an account at another school, please email us and let us know so we can get your name transferred to the Blue Ridge account.
