Artemus Ward Weekly 10/5-10/9
Every Scholar, Every Moment, Every Day!
Principal's Message
This week has been our best week yet. Even with testing taking place we are slowly but surely working out the kinks and making substantial progress towards delivering high quality remote instruction. This morning I had the pleasure of visiting our 8th grade classrooms and witnessed seamless and engaging instruction w/ a large number of our students on camera and actively participating. Nice work Team!
Utilizing Your Supports
In order to fully utilize the expertise we have available to us, I am implementing a new system for requesting individualized and targetted group support from Mrs. Csavina and Mrs. Torres. Moving forward Mrs. Csavina will be available specifically to support grades 4-8 (when she is not on a coverage assignment), and Mrs. Torres will be available to support scholars in grades K-3. In order to most effectively and equitably utilize their expertise, I have created a sign up document by which you can access their schedules and reserve them to support your classroom. It is my expectation that we complete the schedule and fully utilize their talents to the benefit of our scholars. I will attach a link to the bottom of this portion of the bulletin for you to access it. There are 2 components to requesting their services. They are both found in the tabs at the bottom of the Excel document. The first tab is for you to actually schedule them. I am asking that you fill in your name and class section number. They will reach out to you once this scheduling takes place to acquire the methods by which they will access classrooms or students. The second tab is where you will detail student names, objectives, and resources that they will use to engage scholars. This is for organization and alignment purposes. I want to keep this as simple as possible, while still being targeted and intentional. Please begin to reserve slots for your classroom today. If you need clarification on any of the items discussed, do not hesitate to call or text me. I would have liked to discuss this at our last meeting but it was still in development.
Instructional Focus:
Assessment developed from measurable objectives drives instruction
To Do: This week use one of the online assessment tools found in Schoology. Reflect on the results. Identify what students missed most frequently and why.
- What are your next steps?
- How will you refine your instruction to address the learning gap?
That's it for now. I hope everyone has a relaxing weekend.

Testing
The NWEA Reading test for grades 1 - 3 will wrap up this Wednesday, September 30th. All students need to have their Reading test completed by Wednesday. A HUGE shout-out to all of these teachers who have done an amazing job in working out the kinks for remote testing. You are all pros now! The window for Math opens this Monday, September 28th and goes through Friday, October 30th.
The NWEA Testing window for both Reading and Math in grades 4-8 will begin on Monday, September 28th and go through Friday, October 30th. We are excited about the plan that we come up with in that it limits the disruption of your day to day teaching schedules. (Thanks Julie!) Regular ed students will be testing on Wednesday, October 7th and 14th. These dates still give us plenty of opportunities for make-up testing. Sped Ed and ELL testing can begin at any time.
I am happy about this plan in that it gives us enough time to react for students that are having trouble using their cameras. If you are aware of any of your students that do not have a functioning camera, please let me know.
Aimsweb Benchmarking for grades K-3 will begin this coming Monday, September 28th as well. My goal is to complete grades 2 and 3 first and I will be in touch with these teachers very soon.
Special Education
Special Education Important Info:
-Progress Reports are due this coming Monday 10/9/20
-Every IEP Annual/Initial needs to be complete by October 30th so the state can get the right count for Special Education Students in our district. This is important because this is how the state allocates the Special Education funding for our district.
-Hopefully the new amendment for will be given to us by next week. Please remember when we do receive the form, we are to fill out for every student and attach to their IEP's for upcoming annual reviews.
-Asynchronous times can be used for SDI minutes as long as they are performing a task that follows their SDI language and you are monitoring the students progress when they are performing the task. This for will be used for any amendments that are needed, especially the students who have SDI's that will be difficult to provide remotely.
-For any of your students on your case loads who are not attending and you have documentation of contacting, please make sure you are updating the engagement team in teams folders. For students who are not attending and or not making progress, you will indicate this as NP or no progress on progress reports. Make sure you are documenting in the progress reports as to what reason they are not attending. The amendment form that I wrote above will be used in this situation. We would have to reconvene the team to make any changes to the IEP to better serve the students in a remote setting (for students who are attending but not making progress).
- For all service providers....... The district is working on in person testing sites. I was told that there would be one North West side and one North East side.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at any time.
I have uploaded and emailed the power point along with important documents to Microsoft Teams Special Education PLC and the Special Education team in Artemus ward Team.
Mr. Pempin
Hello team!
For those Intervention Specialists who could not attend the Goalbook Seminar on Monday and Tuesday below you will find the recorded session link. It is 60 minutes long and useful for assessing and tracking students on Goalbook. This upcoming Tuesday I will be attending our second Liaison meeting . I will update you on what was entailed in the meeting. I read in the Liaison news feed that Jessica will be explaining to us what we are to do if students are not showing up and what data to input on these cases. I will be sending this out Tuesday night. Stay tuned for this information. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to myself, Mr. Myslenski, and or Mrs. Beets.
