A message from the Principal-Mrs. Bookman
I've always tried to keep an open line of communication with each of you and didn't want this to be any different. I wanted to let you know that you will not be receiving a special message from me over the next several weeks, as I will be at home recovering from surgery. Next week, I will be finishing up some last minute testing and attempting to stay COVID-free before making a kidney donation to my sister. This has been a long process that I thought might have happened earlier in the school year, but it seems that the time is now!
Mr. Lynch will be filling in for me when I am gone. I have full confidence that he will do an excellent job! The students know him and he's looking forward to the opportunity. If you need anything in my absense, please email him at jonathan.lynch@fieldlocalschools.org. He will be taking over this "message"and the school until I return.
I will keep you all posted on how the procedure goes. After the procedure, time is needed for healing and rest, so I won't be back to school until sometime in March. Thank you for your well wishes and words of support.
On a related note, I'm sure that your child probably told you that Mrs. Estell is pregnant. She unfortunately will also be on leave beginning Monday to take care of herself and baby to ensure a healthy delivery. She is devastated that she will not be able to finish the year with us, but will definitely be back in August! We are currently working on finding someone to fill in for her while she's gone.
We are hoping that all of you remain well and appreciate all your kind words, prayers and thoughts as Mrs. Estell and I are on our leaves.
Enjoy the weekend!
Mrs. Bookman
Please check your child's bookbag for their report card!

5th Grade Camp - Informational Meeting - February 15th @ 7:30 pm via zoom
Although things with COVID are currently unknown and causing a great deal of issues in society, we are attempting to plan a possible camp experience for our 5th graders. Assuming things lighten up and the cases of COVID are what they were last Spring/Summer, the Fifth-grade students at Brimfield Elementary and Suffield Elementary will have the opportunity to attend camp at Camp Muskingum in Carrollton, Ohio from May 25 – May 27, 2022. The cost of the 2022 outdoor education program is approximately $145 per student. Parents and students should begin planning on this expense at this time.
There will be an informational parent meeting on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at 7:30 PM via Zoom. A message will be sent to your phone on that day with the link to sign on to the meeting.
To reserve your child’s spot at camp, a deposit of $45.00 will be due before March 1st. Two additional payments of $50.00 are due before April 1st and May 1st. If camp must be canceled due to COVID, any money you have deposited will be returned to you. To attend camp, all fees due to the school must also be paid in full. Contact the secretary if you have questions regarding this.
Calamity Day Notification
Our staff and students will be notified of a school closing due to inclement weather, etc., via our Superintendent’s Twitter account. If you would like to follow us, the Twitter account is @Field_Supt. A School Messenger (phone call) notification will follow the Twitter post. If you have any questions, please contact Administration.
Outdoor Recess
Temperatures are starting to drop and we would like to pass along some details about recess, so you can plan accordingly. We will go out to recess if the temperature is above 20 degrees. If you are in need of a new coat for your child, we do have some that were donated and would be happy to help your child with a new winter coat. Please call or write a note to Mrs. Bookman if we can help! We would like to remind parents that there are certain areas on the playground where snow boots are required and other areas where snow pants and boots are required during the winter months. If they do not wear the proper attire for these areas, they will have to stay on the blacktop area. Thank you in advance for your help.

Strategies that Teach Kids to Set Goals and Help Them Succeed
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break and a great start to the new year! As we look to this new year and setting goals Dr. Michele Borba, Educational Psychologist and recipient of the National Educator Award, offers parenting strategies that teach kids to set goals and to help them succeed.
She identifies seven steps:
1. Define what a goal is. An easy way is to link it to an area of interest. For example, a football player is aiming for a touchdown. It is something to shoot for. Explain goal setting as planning what you need to work on.
2. Share your own goals. Let your children know that you have dreams, and that you recognize that you may need to work on some things in order to achieve them.
3. Help kids create their “dream list”. Help them create a list that includes those things that they actually have the power to make happen. Then spend time together discussing those dreams. Consider what skills are necessary. Does your child need help in order to succeed?
4. Tailor the goal to your child. Have a first time goal-setter work on a goal that can be achieved within a week. Some examples are making their bed every day, reading a book, brushing teeth without being reminded, getting a strike in bowling.
5. Help your child think through steps to success. Some children need to write down steps. The more they think about their goal, and identify what they need to do to achieve it, the greater the chance they will succeed.
6. Track your child’s progress. Use the fridge to show stickers or stars when steps are completed.
7. Celebrate! As goals are achieved, celebrate as a family

Birthday Treats-MUST be prepackaged, ONLY
At this time, we will allow Birthday Treats to be brought to school. We are required to inform you of the Healthy Eating Guidelines (see below) and suggest that you use this when selecting a treat. Whatever you choose, please note that all treats brought to school for the purpose of sharing with others, need to be prepackaged so we are able to know and see the ingredients list. There are many students who have a variety of food allergies and having the ingredients listed helps the school nurse determine if a student with allergies can eat a particular treat.

Each class will have an assigned time and will participate in these specials in a rotating sequence. One huge benefit will be that no special will regularly be missed because of school holidays.
