Cedar Grove Friday Flash
May 29, 2020
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
We are pleased to share that Cedar Grove has been recognized as a Common Sense School through our commitment to preparing students to think critically and use technology responsibly. Students also learned about online/technology concerns such as plagiarism, loss of privacy, and cyber bullying. We thank our teachers and Mrs. Hirschhorn for working with students in creating a school wide culture of digital citizenship, and we appreciate the opportunity to provide the children with these important learning experiences. For more information on Common Sense Schools, please visit the website below.

Yearbooks!
Many of you were wondering if there will be a yearbook this year, or if you missed an opportunity to purchase yours. Yes! We will have the yearbook, and you are not too late!
Due to unexpected circumstances (COVID-19 and school closures), our yearbook sales and design were delayed. There has been some confusion and several families were under the impression that they have already ordered a yearbook earlier this year; however yearbooks were not available for order until last week and are still available for purchase.
- This year, yearbooks can be purchased on-line only. Order your 2019-2020 yearbook now to guarantee price and delivery! Please follow these online ordering instructions carefully!
- Payments for the yearbooks this year would be by credit card only.
- Pre-ordered yearbooks will be mailed to individual homes.
Because of the delays with the ordering process, delivery of the yearbooks is likely anticipated in July. However, we will provide updates if we anticipate faster or longer delivery once more information becomes available. This year we also have a digital yearbook download included with your purchase (more details will be forwarded later).
In addition, for the first time ever, the yearbooks will have a hard cover, and it will include many exciting photographs taken throughout the school year, as well as on-line education events from the last few months of the school year. Furthermore, even though 5th graders didn’t have a chance to have their traditional panoramic group photo taken by Great American Photo this spring, luckily there is a photograph of all 5th grade classes after the Mt. Vernon annual field-trip, so you can look forward to that and many other photographs on the yearbook pages!!!
There will be very few additional book copies ordered this year, and those won’t be available for pick up until after school re-opens. In addition, as usual, the price for the copies that have not been pre-ordered will be higher than the pre-order price. Because of that, don't wait, and GET YOUR COPY TODAY!
If you have any questions, please send them to the following email: cgesyearbooksales@gmail.com
Also, please email the above-mentioned account with your order number, name, and address that should be used to mail the yearbook.
The yearbook pre-order deadline is JUNE 5, but ORDER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, SO YOU DON’T FORGET!
Congratulations to Advaita Gurram (Kindergarten student)!
Last month, the BlackRock Center for the Arts held a virtual art competition with the theme of 'QUARANTINE'. The BlackRock Center for the Arts collected entries from K-12 students in Montgomery County and held an online award ceremony last week. For grade levels K-2, Advaita Gurram won 2nd place in the Public voting category! She created a beautiful artwork entitled, "Pista Shell Birds" with the quote, "Art is eternal and is a special talent to be an artist!" Please join us in celebrating her accomplishment! The virtual exhibit titled, 'Quoatable Quarantine' is now on display in their online gallery and can also be viewed here. Please head over to the website to view the wonderful artworks created by artists in our county.
Update on KidsKreations Art Fundraiser!
Hi Cedar Grove Artists,
Thank you for all the students who participated in the KidsKreations art fundraiser this year! I wanted to give an update on the orders that were placed. The school closure has caused an unexpected delay, but the orders will be arriving soon at our school! Students who placed an order will be able to pick up their orders from school starting June 1st. You may stop by the school to pick up the orders on Mondays from 9 AM-12 PM. I will send out another reminder on June 1st, to make sure you remember to pick up your wonderful creations!
For those who wanted to purchase something, but were unable to because of the closure, it's still not too late! You can continue to order online until May 29th, 2020 using your Art ID code and have it delivered directly to your home. Hello Families!
I'd like to pass along a short video about Social Emotional Learning and why it's important for your child's growth. Please check it out at your convenience!
5th grade parents- In my lesson with 5th graders this week, I introduced Student Service Learning. Please encourage them to view the lesson if they haven't done so. In the lesson, I review the requirements for SSL, which they will be able to begin THIS summer! I've copied the google slide show below. It will be important for you to discuss options and requirements with your child. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!
From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Our Media Specialist
Can you believe that the Summer Media Monthly is ready for you to enjoy?! Summer! So much has happened this school year, but the joy of reading has not changed. In fact, based on what I have experienced these last few months, that joy has only increased in our students. The Summer Media Monthly is full of information, including the Summer Reading Page, the Summer Reading Challenge (this is a fun one!) and tech tips. As always, check out the link frequently as I will be updating the page as information comes my way -- especially about information about book returns and possible summer media activities.
From Mr. Jansson, PE Teacher
Hi Everyone,
I hope this finds you well. We will continue with online learning for May and June. Students in kindergarten through 2nd grade will be working on Strength, Flexibility, and Endurance. Students in 3rd through 5th grades will be working on Health Fitness Components. Try your best to participate in the lessons. There have been issues with some students getting locked out of assessments. One way to trouble shoot is to make sure you have done all the components in the lessons. Don't skip right to the quiz. If you are still having issues, do not worry. We are aware of the problem. The main thing I want is for you to participate and try the lessons.
I am sad we will not be having BEAR DAY, but I sent out this week a virtual field day for you and your family. This is totally optional and there is nothing that needs to be turned in to me. If you have time try a few activities and have fun!!!
Take care & be healthy,
Mr. Jansson
