David Harcourt Retires after 26 Years of Dedicated Service
Anyone who has ever spent time in David Harcourt's classroom could immediately see his passion for teaching and his dedication to his students.
For more than a quarter of a century, David has gone above and beyond to creatively bring science lessons to life for GWA students.
"I started teaching at George Walton Academy in 1994," said David. "I was the biology, chemistry, and physics teacher. I was also the Science Department Chairman because I was the only science teacher here back then! I began teaching in 1964 at Nash Junior High School In Smyrna, Georgia and retired from public schools in 1994."
The 2019-2020 school year marked David's 56th year as a teacher. He coached football for 42 years and basketball for 37 years and coached for the 2002 GWA championship season!
David says he is grateful for the many students and athletes he had the opportunity to work with at GWA. "Thank you to all of the wonderful young people, and some not so young people now, that I was privileged to teach and coach. I wish a happy and successful life for each and every one of them."
"My favorite memories are countless, but include undefeated football teams, my house being rolled by my girls basketball team at Halloween, fun science labs, Dr. Dibble boiling an acid in the lab causing us all to have to evacuate, Brian Cole coaching football with me, practical jokes on Mr. Whitley and Mr. Nicholson, watching my son start every basketball game his junior and senior years here, watching my cousin help win a state basketball championship for GWA, seeing my granddaughters here for many years, and countless happy days in the classroom."
"So many good times. I will miss everyone at GWA and all the friends I have made."
Thank you for 26 wonderful years, David. We will miss you too!
