Thank you to our amazing EV community for contributing to a heartwarming staff SURPRISE. Please enjoy!
Many thanks to Mrs. Rapp for sharing the idea for this video.
INSTRUCTIONAL EXPECTATIONS
Students will continue to participate in an asynchronous approach to learning. All lessons will be shared in flexible formats via Google Classroom or Seesaw. The teacher lessons may take approximately 10-20 minutes to view, but students should work beyond the teaching time on independent or guided practice. Teachers will provide feedback to students, and they will be available to meet with students for up to one hour each day during “office hours.”
K-1 focus of instruction: reading, phonics, math
2-6 focus of instruction: reading, writing, math
Each week, students can expect to participate in two new English Language Arts (ELA) lessons and two new mathematics lessons.
NEW: Science and social studies will be required as soon as this week or next week depending on the grade level. Students can expect one new science/social studies lesson per week.
ASSESSMENTS
Students will continue to participate in formative assessments. Formative assessments can look like reader responses, writing, answering some questions, posting a video, and more. Teachers will provide feedback to students.
Students will not participate in formalized assessments such as PSSA testing, STAR math testing, Classroom Diagnostic Tools (CDT) testing, and Fountas and Pinnell (F&P) assessments.
REPORT CARDS
From the report card...
Standards-based grading aligns grading with the PA Core Standards. The report card accurately communicates achievement of learning targets to students, parents, and educators. Our report card provides specific information about the level of proficiency on the learning targets that are taught each trimester.
By the end of the year, students are expected to be proficient for each standard. Students scoring below proficiency will receive instructional supports to achieve mastery for specific content and skills.
Given our current situation, teachers will do their best to indicate a proficiency level (scores of 1, 2, 3, or 4) for each standard; however, it should be noted that teachers will use a "*" on your child's report card when there is not enough evidence to determine a level of proficiency. The elementary principals and curriculum supervisors have instructed teachers to use the "*" as a grade level and more liberally than usual given the current situation.
Special area teachers will not report a level of proficiency for any standard. They will use the "*" for all standards for trimester 3.
ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS
Congratulations to our EV students! Of our 570 students, 97% attended remote learning on Friday, April 17!
The District is required to account for daily attendance. Credit for attendance will be taken by student participation in the daily activities that occur throughout the day. Essentially this means that your child "showed up" and connected with his/her homeroom teacher. This could take multiple forms such as completing work, answering a "Question of the Day" or participating in a virtual meeting. It is important to note that “participation” at every grade level is going to be different. Teachers will submit their daily attendance by 3:00 p.m. Please, please help our teachers by having your child at least check-in before 3:00 p.m. They do not need to submit their assignments by 3:00 p.m.
If your child is sick or there is a family emergency, please treat it like any other sick day and call the attendance line at 610-469-5688, to report the illness.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Do you have or know a child who will be 5 by 9/1/20? Did you or the child's parent/guardian complete the kindergarten registration process yet? Don't delay! We can do virtual registration.
On Friday, all fully registered families received a letter from Ms. Seeley, Principal. The letter shares whether students will be in an AM or in a PM session to assist families with childcare planning.
We need 11 more students to register to have four kindergarten sections, 2 AM and 2 PM.
Why is this important to have done as early as possible? The numbers inform our staffing, class placements, and supply ordering. The earlier students register, the better prepared we are for all of our students (and staff).
Spread the word!

OJRSD BOARD POLICY #815
April 20, 2020
Dear Elementary Families,
As we continue to pave new roads with remote learning, we thank you for all that you have done to support your child. We understand that the days can be hectic at times; we are grateful for your patience. Currently, we are heavily relying on devices to access the internet. Since we will be using these formats for the remainder of the school year, we wanted to remind our students and family members of OJR’s acceptable use policy. Our overarching goal is to keep everyone safe and following the appropriate expectations in this remote environment.
As remote learning continues, some of our teachers will continue to host Zoom meetings, Google Meet sessions, or participate in other virtual classroom settings. With this in mind, we are asking families to work with students and remind them of expectations in remote learning environments and to follow our School Board Policy 815 and Regulation 815A on acceptable use.
Students should only be using their ojrsd.net email and not their personal email.
Students are never to record class sessions or take screenshots of the teacher or their classmates while online.
Please be advised that virtual spaces may be recorded by the teacher so that they can be posted for viewing by other students in the class who cannot attend.
Students will still be held to the district student code of conduct for their words and actions in a remote learning environment, including digital citizenship.
The Owen J. Roberts School District utilizes Bark for Schools monitoring software to protect our students during their online encounters while they are using their district Google account. Bark for Schools uses industry-leading, machine-learning algorithms to continually monitor student Gmail messages, Gchat conversations, Google Drive documents and internet searches. When violations of the district’s acceptable use policy are detected, Bark will notify our district technology department who will then notify the building administrator. Violations of the acceptable use policy may result in discipline.
Thank you for your cooperation in the matter, and please be safe.
Very truly yours,
Mr. Todd Oswald, East Coventry Elementary
Ms. Christine Seeley, East Vincent Elementary
Dr. Malinda McKillip, French Creek Elementary
Mr. Brad Bentman, North Coventry Elementary
