From the Principal...
Dear MacArthur Family,
Wow, we are halfway through the school year! Time flies when you are having fun. Our constant drive and attention to detail have increased student achievement and outcomes. The focus will remain on culture, writing, and academic achievement. There are many areas to celebrate student success; below are some of our goal areas we are focusing on as we begin the second half of the school year:
Goal Area 1: Continue to organize, communicate, and practice school-wide expectations in common areas (lunchroom, playground, hallway, assemblies, breakout spaces).
Goal Area 2: By the end of the 22-23 school year, our teams are working with updated curriculum standards to articulate essential questions and transfer goals related to grade-level standards and learning priorities.
Goal Area 3: Develop a consistent approach to unit and assessment implementation for the K-5 Units of Study writing program.
Speaking of our writing program, Unit 2 On-Demand writing assessments will be coming home by January 30th. As a reminder, for on-demand assessments, students take one writing block (45 minutes) and write their best for the entirety of that period. Students are not given specific topics, but instead, they are given general guidelines and scholars have the opportunity to determine what topic they would like to write about. On-demand assessments provide information about what students can do independently.
Teachers assess student writing using multiple tools, including the writing rubric that you have seen come home once already this school year. The rubric explains what writing should look like at the end of the year for each grade level. The rubric is a progression of indicators that help teachers understand where a student is in their writing, and help them determine how to best meet their writing needs for instruction going forward.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding as to where we are with our goals. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Mr. Gonzalez
