West Point El. Parent Update
Week of September 18, 2023
Dear West Point Families,
Welcome back to another great week! We love working with your beautiful children and helping them learn and grow.
Here are four important things to know for the coming week:
- Thank you for supporting our World's Finest Chocolate School Fundraiser. We have sold 550 boxes so far! This Thursday is the last day to check out a box. Please return all money to the school by Wednesday, September 27.
- Our first Lockdown Drill will be this Wednesday, September 20. We have included information below about our Standard Response Protocol. We hold these drills so students and staff will know how to respond immediately and safely in an emergency.
- The Parent Conference (ILP) Scheduler opens on Sunday, September 17 (today) and closes at midnight on September 28. Please log on through myDSD and schedule a conference time for each of your students.
- Heads up! Our PTA Spirit Week and Membership Drive will be Monday-Friday, September 25-29. Watch for a flyer to come home this week with more information about dressing up for themed days.
Sincerely,
Marjorie Conrad and Michelle Yoho

September Mission Pawssible
Please encourage your students to work on the school and PTA mission of the month!
The School Mission is to complete iReady Math lessons with accuracy and to participate in the iReady contest. We are tracking the number of iReady math lessons that are completed with accuracy in each grade level and class. There will be a fun prize for grade level winners at the end of each month.
The PTA Mission of the Month is to pick up litter at a park and throw it away. This is something students can do with their families. They can also focus on picking up litter on our playground and school grounds!
School Policies Review
Attendance
We are asking parents to help us make attendance a priority this year. State law requires students to attend 90% of the school year. Students who miss more than this amount, which is about 18 days, are at significantly greater risk for falling behind and not achieving grade-level standards.
We are encouraging outstanding attendance this year with our brag tags! We understand that a student might occasionally be sick and need to stay home. Students can miss up to 1 day each month and earn their Attendance Brag Tag for the month. We are looking forward to passing out our September Attendance Brag Tags at the end of this month!

Student Contest Opportunities
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Speech Contest
The contest connects to the Utah Common Core and DESK Standards in Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Contestants must memorize an excerpt between 1-3 minutes in length. The excerpt must be from a single speech of Dr. King and cannot be from multiple speeches.
Students who are interested in participating can meet with Mrs. Dawnell Elcock on Monday, September 25 at 2:30 p.m. Teachers will be given information about this meeting so interested students can attend. Students will perform their speeches on October 10-11 in front of a panel of judges. Our judges will choose 1 winner from each category to advance to District Judging. Please email Mrs. Elcock at delcock@dsdmail.net with any questions.
