Updating your Contact Information
Have you recently moved or has your contact information changed throughout the past year? Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) encourages families to review their information the Division has on file to ensure it’s up to date. Using the Correction and Verification Form available through the PowerSchool Parent Portal, families can review their information on file for each student—including addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, parent and guardian information, emergency contacts, medical details and other related information—and submit any updates needed.
Reviewing and updating the form ensures the Division has the most up-to-date information regarding your child. Your review is especially important in case there’s any communication the Division or school needs to send out over the summer months related to classes next year. All EIPS families are asked to review their child’s Correction and Verification Form by June 13 at noon. After this time, EIPS will turn the form off for the remainder of the school year—available again at the start of the 2022-23 school year.
NOTE: Only submit updates for the changes that have already taken place. If you’re moving this summer, you’ll submit the necessary updates to your address through the Correction and Verification Form at the start of next school year after you’ve moved.
If you have questions about the form or the PowerSchool Parent Portal, contact the school at 780-467-5930.
Grade 9 Farewell - June 3
On June 3rd from 5-7pm we would like to invite our Grade 9 students and families to our Farewell Ceremony. To accommodate all families in the space, we ask that you limit guests to 2 per student.
Please RSVP to general.frh@eips.ca
We will be sharing a link to a Live-Stream for extended family and friends who would like to view the event.
After the ceremony we will be having a small Mix and Mingle in the courtyard for some snacks and pictures. Doors will open at 4:30pm
Help us celebrate the last 3 years with our amazing Grade 9 students!
Cookie Fundraiser
Our FRH students have created this fundraiser to support Halla Ahlefeld, as she and her family deal with the very challenging realities of LaBrune Syndrome. Halla and her sister Ayva are among 35 people in the world with this rare, terminal disease. Halla is a beloved member of our school, and our students are excited to help her out in a small way.
There are two parts to this fundraiser. Confetti Sweets Products can be ordered online until Sunday, June 12. They will be available for pick up, Friday, June 17… just in time for Father’s Day! Students will also be selling cookies at lunch hour, Friday, June 17. Individually wrapped chocolate chunk or sugar cookies will be sold for $2.00. Proceeds from this Fundraiser will go towards the purchase a specialized wheelchair for Halla.
Orders can now be made through your PowerSchool Parent Portal Account.
More information about Halla and LaBrune Syndrome can be found in this Global News video: https://globalnews.ca/video/rd/df6f7ca8-ccdf-11ec-9e7c-0242ac110008/?jwsource=cl
Reminder: 2021-22 School Fees
School fees for the 2021-22 school year are posted on the PowerSchool Parent Portal. All fees are due within 30 days of being posted. Throughout the year, fees are often added to cover the costs for various activities, such as field trips, extracurricular activities, and late, damaged or lost textbooks.
To access your fee information, simply log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal and go to “Student Fees.” There you can view fees and pay them online using a credit card. Make sure to monitor your child’s account on an ongoing basis.
For more information about school fees, waivers and payment deadlines, visit eips.ca/schools/fees. And, if you have questions, think there is an error or need help creating a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, contact your child’s school directly before the summer break.
NOTE: Pursuant to Board Policy 23: School Fees and Administrative Procedure 505: School and Administrative Fees, EIPS will forward any unpaid 2021-22 fee amounts to a collection agency. To prevent this from happening, remember to pay your fees before August 31, 2022.
EXAM Preparation
Stressed about the exams? Searching for extra practice materials? Look no further! Did you know that there are two great websites that you can use to prepare and practice? Check out https://alberta.exambank.com/ for in depth review and practice questions. You will need a login and password –check with your teachers or email Mrs. Getschel for the information. Another excellent resource is Solaro – to access this review and exam prep program for all core classes from kindergarten to grade 12, you will need a library card (free) from Strathcona County Library. If you would like more information drop by the library to chat with Mrs. Getschel or stop by the Strathcona County Library.
Library Information
Please help bring our books back – if you have books that belong to the classroom library of Mrs. Getschel or Mrs. Deines, please help them make their way back home (you’ll know who it belongs to because our names are written on the top of the books).
Library materials will continue to be signed out until June 6th – all outstanding library materials will become due on June 13th.
First Chapter Friday
This week’s First Chapter Friday is Okoye to the People: A Black Panther Novel, by Ibi Zoboi. Okoye is a new recruit for T'Chaka's royal guard: the Dora Milaje. Known for their loyalty and warrior abilities, the Dora are respected and revered in Okoye's home country of Wakanda. But when Okoye is sent on her very first mission—to America—she'll learn that her status as a Dora means nothing to New Yorkers and her expectations for the world outside of her own quickly fall apart. Stop by the library to sign out your copy today.

First Nations, Métis, and Inuit learning corner
As our country moves toward reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, we thought we’d bring you a simple, easy way to move your own understanding forward if you’re curious about how you can be a part of the learning which leads to reconciliation. #Next150 was first introduced a couple of years ago, and we felt it was a good time to re-introduce it to the FR Haythorne community. Each link will take you to a short activity you can do to move your learning forward. This week we look at the concerns expressed by Indigenous communities in regards to a term we should now be familiar with; cultural appropriation. What does this mean exactly? In this case, it refers to taking something from a culture & using it without understanding its true meaning and/or devaluing it. Why is this so significant? Indigenous culture is meant to be shared, but it should not be taken unnecessarily & used for someone else to profit from. This could include images, dress, music or cuisine or traditions. #Next150 Challenge "Authentic Indigenous Arts"

Upcoming Events and Important Dates
Planning for the 2022- 23 School Year
March and April are busy times for school lead teachers and the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education team as planning begins for the next school year. Lead teachers and the team reflect on the successes and challenges of the past year, and the hopes for 2022-23. If you have ideas or feedback for your child’s school or the Division in general, please reach out to the lead teacher or connect with the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education team.
Treaty 6 and Métis Nation Flag Raising | June 13
If you’ve driven by EIPS Central Services recently, you may have noticed the addition of two new flag poles. As a further commitment on the path of truth-telling toward reconciliation, and as an affirmation as Treaty partners, EIPS will be raising the Treaty 6 and Métis Nation flag on June 13. Each school in the Division will also display the two flags and are busy planning staff professional development and student learning experiences to understand the significance of each flag. More information on the Central Services ceremony and the specific events at each school will be shared in the near future.
Opening of Central Services Land-based Learning Space | June 21
EIPS has been working closely with Elder Wilson Bearhead to design and build a land-based learning space at EIPS Central Services. With spring on its way, construction will resume on the space. As part of Indigenous Peoples’ Day on June 21, EIPS will officially open the space, honour our ongoing relationship with Elder Wilson and affirm our commitment to deepen our relationship with the land that sustains us. We’ll share details of the opening event as the date draws closer.
Student Transportation
Planning to use Student Transportation in the 2022-23 school year? If so, make sure your child is registered so Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) can plan routes and send your child a bus pass before the first day of school.
Families registered will received tentative route schedules and invoices by the end of the month—fees are due June 30, 2022.
For more information about EIPS Student Transportation visit www.eips.ca/transportation.
