From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
What an incredibly active week we've had at CDS Middle School!
It was a gorgeous day at the Cheongna Lake Park for this year's We Run Cheongna fun run. The air was just cool enough to keep kids moving under the autumn sunshine. We were so happy to see our middle school students bring their full enthusiasm and effort to the event. A special thanks to Mr. Parmar and our P.E. department for making the day possible.
The Student Council also did an excellent job planning and hosting various activities including a Dress up Relay Race, Sharks and Minnows, Mafia, a food station and more! We're proud of their growing leadership skills and look forward to more successful Student Council events in the future.
I'd also like to extend a huge thank you to our library team Ms. Choo and Ms. Menzel for their excellent work organizing this year's BookCon (Book Week). They worked very hard to make this year's event one of the best we've ever had. Each day brought new excitement and engagement all centered on books and reading.
Coming up next week we will wrap up Term 1 and begin Term 2 with an assembly during Long House. This week teachers have shared more of the wonderful learning happening in classrooms, so be sure to check it out within the newsletter.
Have a great weekend!

Book Week Highlights
Summary from Ms. Choo
It has been a week filled with events to celebrate books, authors, and reading. Thank you to all students and teachers who made it a great week!
On Monday, we kicked off BookCon by welcoming author and illustrator, Mr. Bryn Barnard. He did presentations with all middle school classes and facilitated an art workshop after school for students and parents. Also, his wife even offered a free yoga session for the Coloring Club.
We Exceeded our Fundraising Goal for World Reader!
Spanish Culture Day Highlights
On Wednesday October 10th, CDS had its first annual Hispanic Culture Day Celebration in the new Cafeteria during CC time. CDS Spanish Department brought in Spanish food catered by the restaurant, On the Border. There was latin music the entire time and students first enjoyed food, and then they got engaged in speaking activities while eating. They introduced themselves in Spanish, talked about their likes favorite food and many more. Later, they were encouraged to participate in activities such as face painting, coloring skulls, introducing themselves, and pinning the tail on the donkey. It was hard to leave when the bell rang at 4:00. Spanish department had a very successful event for the first time and definitely would continue to have this event in the future.
Below are some students' comments for this event:
"I thought it was great. I didn't know that this was a huge event where most of the students joined. It was fun to learn about others through the use of Spanish." ~Kim, Dohyun G11
"I think that it was amazing because there was music and several things and activities to do which made it very fun and I had an incredible time." ~Anonymous
"It was a fun and exciting day. I enjoyed pinning the tail on the horse the best." Alex Noh G7
"I enjoyed station 5 the most because it was interactive and I could play the game with my friends." - Linda Hwang G9
"It was great. I liked the atmosphere. Getting to eat food and socializing with friends and making new friends was the best thing. " - Manhyuk Han G11

Mr. Menzel Learns from Leading Educator Dr. Tomlinson
"On Friday, October 5th and Saturday, October 6th, I was fortunate enough to attend a workshop at Seoul Foreign School where Dr. Carol Ann Tomlinson was conducting a workshop. Dr. Tomlinson, a professor at the University of Virginia, is known around the world for her research on differentiation in the classroom--in fact, teachers flew to South Korea from several other continents to attend.
During the workshop, Dr. Tomlinson stressed the key elements of education--many of which Dalton implements as cornerstones to the institute:
1. Student choice for improved engagement in lessons,
2. Time for student self-discovery, and
3. Teaching to all levels within the classroom.
It was fantastic to learn that CDS is doing quite a few things that Dr. Tomlinson was praising. I left the workshop each day re-energized and returned to CDS ready to discuss what I learned with the other faculty members!"

Grade 5 Cell Model Project with Mr. Keel
For this project 5th grade students constructed an accurate model of a plant cell or an animal cell and the organelles inside and gave a presentation of their work. In order to make the presentations more descriptive and fun, students created analogies for all the organelles in the cell. By comparing each organelle to something from the real world, students were able to add relevancy to the content and give a meaningful entertaining presentation to their peers. Students also compared the cell as a whole to real-world entities that have many functioning parts and explained why.
Some great choices were: "A cell is like..." a school, the human body, a city, a factory, and a computer. Students also gave peer reviews of each others projects.

G5 Social Studies with Mr. Thach
Grade 5 students are hard at work this week in Social Studies class showcasing their understanding of what makes a civilization. After our unit of study of Mesopotamia, students are charged with creating their own city-state that would stand the test of time.
Students are in the process of drawing out maps that represent their city and also designing and creating artifacts from their society. Hopefully this hands on experience will help students remember the seven characteristics of civilization and will drive our study further when we dive into term 2 with ancient China and India.

7A with Ms. Liu & Mr. Menzel
We also had a Cosplay Day on Wednesday. The students in 7A and the house teachers chose Disney as the theme and everyone prepared a costume related to that theme. Fortunately, 7A was voted to be the best-dressed house and we enjoyed the donut party during the morning house time.
During the longhouse on Thursday we had a trivia tournament. Students showed great interest and actively participated in this tournament. This week has been extremely busy for students and teachers. However, we have had a lot of fun. Many of us are already looking forward to the next book week.

G8 Art with Mrs. Koetje
The first three photos are a progression of an individuals work as the students took photos of their work at the start of each class later to be published in their digital portfolio.

Music with Ms. Van Liew
Many people around the country had Tuesday off, since it was Hanguel Day. The 6th graders had an end of term performance on Tuesday morning. Throughout the term, the 6th graders have been learning about traditional Korean music, primarily, they learned to play a samulnori piece (percussion ensemble), a folk song (learned at the Gugak Center), and a traditional dance (either sogo or mask dance). It was a really special day to perform on Tuesday because it was a great way to celebrate the holiday and the culture with Korean music!
We had a great turn out of 6th grade parents coming to watch their students perform. A lot of Korean music was traditionally performed outside. We wanted to make the performance as authentic as possible, so we performed by the CDS Arches! The students were excited to perform and did a great job! Take a look at their performances below!

Coloring Club
During the club time on Monday, the coloring club members participated in a mindfulness and Yoga session led my Mrs. Bryn.
She showed students how to maintain a peaceful mind and love yourself through Yoga. The students worked really hard to catch up all the directions and it was a really good
for everyone.
