Primary Elections to be held at CMS on Tuesday

On Tuesday, March 3rd, residents of the community will file into Corner Middle School's competition gymnasium to cast their ballots for a number of candidates in national, statewide, and local elections. We would like to remind all guests on the campus to please be mindful that school is still in session and that students will be transitioning across the road. Please be careful as you drive through the intersections, crosswalk areas, and parking lots. We welcome you to our campus and hope that you will allow our students learn from you as you take part in the voting process!

Why do we lag behind in math performance in alabama and what we are doing about it at CMS

This year, our math instructional staff held a schoolwide Math Night at a CMS Connects event for the families of our students. The purpose of this event was to give families an idea of why and how math instruction is changing at Corner Middle School.

At the end of last week, USA Today delved into why American students struggle with math in comparison to the rest of the world. Families who were able to attend the event, this investigative report further supports our conversations from that night. If you were unable to attend, this article supports the work of that evening, helping us to understand why the way we were taught in 1955, 1965, 1975, 1985, 1995, 2005 and all of the years before and in between is simply not good enough for our students today to be competitive for scholarships, college slots, or jobs in the 21st Century. We encourage you to read this piece.

Thoughts from the Principal . . .

When we reconfigured schools four years ago, I told the staff leaving here to go to Bagley Elementary School that aside from all of the amazing things that would happen for our kids, they would be getting the BETTER of the two Mr. Mannings at our schools . . . Mr. Henry Manning.

Mr. Manning (or Mr. Henry, as I am told he is called there), is my dad. He absolutely loves the kids of Bagley and Corner. He is -- as he puts it -- "a sanitation engineer" at Bagley. But as I am reminded regularly, he is so much more than a custodian there.

As the principal at the middle school, I have been told quite often over the years by students and their families, that my dad really cares for them. He is often stern sometimes, holding the students to a high standard, but also someone who cares for and loves the students -- following them through middle and high school long after they have left him.

This week, dad got sick and had a bit of emergency surgery that has sidelined him for a while. I am reminded how much he is cared for by our community. On behalf of my and my family, thank you to all of the faculty and staff at Bagley and CMS for your thoughts and prayers and words of concerns. Thank you to all of the students at Bagley who made and shared cards and letters. I can assure you, my dad will read them all. Finally, thank you to the community for providing encouragement to my dad and our family.

We are all truly blessed to have such wonderful schools in such great communities!

CMS Cheer Hosting Art Camp

On Wednesday, March 18th, the Corner Middle School Cheerleaders will host an art camp here on campus from 3:00 - 5:00 to raise money for camp and the coming year. All students, faculty members, parents, or community members are welcome to attend! The cost is $25.00 and participants will have the choice of painting a sunflower or watermelon slice door hanger in preparation for spring.

The event will be led by Queen of Her Castle designer/artist, Tiffany Hill. Money is due to the school by March 13th. Checks should be made payable to Corner Middle School. If you have questions about the event, please contact Lindsey Hoggle (lhoggle@jefcoed.com) or Lauren Wakefield (lwakefield@jefcoed.com) for more information.

Second Semester Dates of Importance

In an effort to assist families in their planning of appointments or other activities, the chart below lists some of the second semester dates of importance at Corner Middle School. We ask that you try to help us by making every effort to have your student at school during the spring ACAP. The ACAP is the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program -- our new state test -- where your students are tested in English Language Arts, Math, and Science. Hopefully, having these dates ahead of time can help us avoid absences. Please remember that these dates are subject to change.

Attendance Matters Update Through February

As we move into March, we begin our state assessments at CMS. This month we will administer the ACAP-Alternate to select students in grades 5-8. In addition, we complete the third quarter prior to spring break.

Please remember, the state of Alabama defines a student as "chronically absent" when he or she has 18 or more absences.

Letters have gone out describing the referral process to the Jefferson County Family Court's Early Warning process for those who fall into the at-risk column. Families, please have your students at school at school and on-time each day!

Quote of the Week . . .

"We must have courage to bet on our ideas, to take the calculated risk, and to act. Everyday living requires courage if life is to be effective and bring happiness."

--Maxwell Maltz (American surgeon)--

Video of the Week . . .

We continue our school focus on MINDSET. In this week's video, astronaut Chris Hadfield, discusses RISK-TAKING from the perspective of someone being shot into space in a ship attached to "a bomb." He addresses GROWTH MINDSET and overcoming the fear of taking a risk. What is your "rocket"? What risks are you willing to take to achieve your ultimate goals and dreams?
