DOLPHIN SPLASH
Volume 7: September 26 - 30, 2022
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, Paula Saavedra
Dear El Marino families,
Hello. I am excited to join the El Marino community and look forward to working with and meeting you. Mr. Torres and I will be working together to provide the best school experience for our students, families, and community.
I have been in education for over 20 years. I was a classroom teacher for 13 years teaching 2nd-5th grades in both dual immersion and English only settings. I am Spanish bilingual. I have been an administrator for 9 years and have worked at both the elementary and middle school levels.
My philosophy of education is that every child is a capable learner when given the right tools and held to the highest standards. Together I know we can provide for our students the rich environment needed for them to be successful and happy.
Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
Paula Saavedra
CCUSD COVID TESTING UPDATE - September, 2022
Dear CCUSD Staff & Families,
CCUSD has been monitoring COVID case rates both within our district and in all of LA County. The general tracking numbers for both can be found on our Dashboard:
COVID-19 Dashboard (ccusd.org)
As you can see from the reported case numbers, the rates have been steadily decreasing since school resumed last month. Because of this decline, effective at the end of this month, CCUSD is eliminating weekly onsite testing for our staff and students. Testing will continue through the last week of September - 9/29/22 being the last day.
We will keep LFN “on call” so that we are able to resume testing on short notice if changing case numbers make that necessary.
Free weekly drive-thru testing every Saturday from 9am - 12noon will continue in the Elenda parking lot. The registration information for that is below:
https://firmalab.labsvc.net/patientportal/index.html?50
We expect that this change will allow our students and staff to return to a more stable instructional schedule, eliminating this particular weekly interruption.
Thank you for your ongoing cooperation as we continue to move through this Pandemic.
CCUSD
_______
https://firmalab.labsvc.net/patientportal/index.html?50
Esperamos que este cambio permita a nuestros estudiantes y personal regresar a un horario de instrucción más estable, eliminando esta interrupción semanal en particular.
Gracias por su cooperación a medida que continuamos avanzando a través de esta pandemia.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR Assistant Superintendent of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Dr. Jennifer Smith
As we enter the time of Rosh Hashanah (September 25 - 27) and Yom Kippur (October 4 - 5), the District, CCFT and ACE are committed to honoring religious and cultural days.
CCUSD is taking active strides towards ensuring that all stakeholders have the opportunity to observe holidays of cultural and/or religious significance. To that end, whether or not local holidays are days off, there will be no tests, deadlines, or exams on those days. These days will be excused absences for students.

Día de Independencia Performance
El Marino Language School teachers organized memorable performances in celebration of Día de Independencia. The teachers organized a wonderful school-wide presentation and the Spanish Immersion 3-5th graders were able to showcase their performances to all the students.
Día de Independencia marks the declaration of independence of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Chile from 300 years of Spanish rule. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries a wave of Latin American independence movements namely by Haiti in 1791 and inspired other regions across Latin America.
Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica declared their independence from Spain on Sept. 15, 1821. Mexico on Sept. 16, and Chile on Sept. 18. This year marks the 201st anniversary of these declarations of independence.
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, learning its history, and valuing our unique identities
As you learned a little bit about Dia de Independencia above, you can now see why in the United States September 15 marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The term Hispanic was developed in a sea of disagreement as different U.S. government entities tried to find a way to categorize or lump together people of Mexican, Central American, South American and Carribean origin or descendance. In the United States in the 19th century, the term “Hispano” was used to describe people descended from Spaniards who settled in the Southwest in the days before American annexation. This further developed into the Americanized political term of “Hispanic” for a population that were from or descended from Spanish speaking countries. However, this blanketed term of “Hispano” or the Americanized “Hispanic” and Latin American doesn’t account for the centuries long indigenous civilizations that existed long before pre-columbian or iberian conquest as well as Afro-Latinos. There is a lot of complexity to assigning one identity or name to a very diverse peoples that may have shared language and cultural traditions. A few good articles to read about this topic are: NPR’s Vannesa Romo “Yes, We're Calling It Hispanic Heritage Month And We Know It Makes Some Of You Cringe” as well as this University of California article “ What’s the difference between Hispanic, Latino, and Latinx?” by Antonio Campos.
The terms or names placed upon a people from various backgrounds and histories is complex. I am glad we are more open to having these conversations now. Whether it’s Hispanic, Latino/a, Latinx, Mexican American, Chicana/o, Colombian American, Guatemaleco/a, Salvadoreño/a, or another identity, I would say the most important thing is to get to know the individual person and respect, appreciate, and create an understanding for their own self-determined identity.
It’s beautiful that we belong to a school community that wants to share in the appreciation of others language and cultural traditions and being more informed and educated as a community is also a part of the immersion experience.
Please see the Padlet below to learn more and find ways to celebrate as a family.
Masanga Marimba PTA Assembly
We did it! Our first school assembly was a success! Kids and teachers danced, sang, played the marimbas and experienced something new in this month’s assembly in honor of September’s Latino Cultural Heritage Month. This assembly was an effort to highlight a part of latinidad that isn’t always seen throughout the community. Masanga Marimba showcased their marimba and mbira knowledge to the kids and show how Latin American and African countries (Zimbabwe) share musical traditions.
Thankful to Masanga Marimba for this wonderful assembly. Songs included call and response in Spanish, Japanese, Zimbabwean and English.
We hope that your children enjoyed the performance and also that they experienced something new. You can ask your kiddos about the marimba!

Idle Free Schools: Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!
El Marino Language School’s Green 5 Committee is starting an idling reduction campaign this week.
Did you know that if everyone in the U.S. stopped idling for five minutes a day it would be equivalent to taking five hundred thousand cars off the road and saving 1.6 million tons of CO2? El Marino is supporting this campaign and encouraging families to reduce student’s exposure to air toxins that are emitted from idling vehicles.
In the next two weeks you will see new no idling signs posted outside the school. We are also asking parents and guardians to sign pledge forms that they won’t idle unnecessarily. These forms will be sent out by room parents.
Save money and protect the air by turning off your car when waiting more than 10 seconds.

JAPANESE CULTURAL HERITAGE CLUB (JCHC)
The Japanese Cultural Heritage Club (JCHC) is comprised of parent volunteers of El Marino Language School. JCHC was founded on the mission of educating El Marino and its surrounding community about Japanese culture, traditions, and arts. Pre-COVID, JCHC held its annual Japanese traditions workshop through a grant from the Aratani Foundation and helped with undokai (sports day), mochizuki (mochi making) and other events. Additionally, JCHC holds various Japanese arts workshops and social events for both students and parents.
We'd like to continue sharing the Japanese culture to El Marino and its community and we are seeking parent members!
All parents - SIP and JIP programs - are welcome to join.

We also love volunteers who can weed and plant before or after school hours. Plus, we do a big clean up and prep twice a year on weekends as well. So, volunteering with us works for all kinds of schedules.
Come when you can! The garden is entirely parent run and we need you!l.
