Old Testament Lesson: Genesis 22:1-14
Gospel Lesson: Matthew 10:40-42
Sermon by Rev. Aaron White:
Introducing God: The Faithful Provider!
When we imagine introducing God to others, the last vision we might imagine sharing is that of the divine one who commands a father to sacrifice his only son. But that is precisely what the Lord commands Abraham to do in this Sunday’s Old Testament Lesson. And to the reader’s surprise, Abraham doesn’t resist. He and Isaac travel to the mountain in the land of Moriah, in obedience of God’s command. But when Abraham raises his hand, the Lord stops him and provides another suitable sacrifice.
Though we might find it challenging to do so, we must look beyond the raised knife, in order to see what this story is really teaching us about God. What we discover is a God who desires to be in a relationship with us, but who requires that we place our complete trust in the Lord. If we are willing to sacrifice what we love most, God will assure that we are provided with all that we need to live and to serve the Lord.
Additional readings from the Revised Common Lectionary: Psalm 13:1-6; Romans 6:12-23
Phase One of the FPC Return to In-Person Worship Begins Sunday, July 5!
Phase One Will Require Some Adjustments and Provide Some Options!
It is preferred that you enter the church through the lobby doors on the north and south side of the church, however both lobby & Narthex entrances will have reception areas. Those who are unable to walk long distances, may also enter through the front-north side door by the handicap parking space.
The coffee bar will be closed and worshippers are requested to go directly into the sanctuary. The restrooms will be open, but please refrain from lingering in the church lobby longer than necessary.
We ask that all worshippers wear a face mask while in the building. Please stop at the Reception Table to use hand sanitizer and pick up a courtesy face mask in case you have forgotten to bring your own.
Bulletins will be displayed on screens. No paper copies will be distributed.
You may sit in family or close friend groups in the open areas indicated. These open spaces have been measured to be a minimum of six feet apart from other seating spaces. Ushers will be available to assist in finding the right space for your family.
After the service, please continue to observe social distance protocols. Please remain 6 feet away from those who are not in your party.
The Church Nursery is closed through August. Materials and objects at the children's table in the Narthex have been limited to items that can be effectively sanitized between services. Parents should make their own decision about allowing their children to use this area during the service.
Passing of the Peace will be a non-contact process announced by the minister during the service.
Holy Communion will be observed per the regular schedule using individual pre-packaged elements. Elements have been difficult to find as suppliers cannot keep up with demand. If you require a gluten-free option, please plan to bring your own.
Music will be offered as individual instrumental performances, and small ensembles. The choir will sit in the audience, and only the organist and music director will work from the choir loft.
The minister will preach from the pulpit without a liturgist.
Congregational responses and instrumental hymns will be held, and we ask that face masks remain on throughout the service.
The impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic and the separation it has caused have been keenly felt by our entire country. First Presbyterian Church of Fulton is dedicated to protecting public health while continuing to answer God’s call to pray, serve, and act in his name. Your Session continues to meet and stay abreast of emerging COVID-19 news and the changing recommendations from State and County health authorities, and to receive the advice of the Missouri Union Presbytery, PC(USA), and our insurance providers. It is hoped that regular Sunday School classes, and more open use of the building (including the lobby and fellowship hall), will be forthcoming in August.
