Ms. Gibson's Band Nerd Bio

I always like to share a bit about me, so that if we have yet to meet in person you can get idea of who your child has for a band teacher in 6th and 8th grades.

Originally from Kansas City, MO, I moved to a rural community where I grew up on a farm with every farm animal you could imagine. Growing up on a farm taught me so much responsibility and also gave me a strong sense of the importance of life in general. My grandmother, who lived with us, insisted that I begin taking piano lessons when I started 2nd grade, she must have had some premonition about me. Those piano lessons did the trick because in 6th grade I knew I was going to teach others about music. Since that fateful Saturday morning out in the country, the day of my first piano lesson with Ms. Kay, my life has been completely full of music every since.

Piano is my first instrument, but flute is my second and what I played in band from the get-go! I've played in many bands and lots of places since I began this crazily awesome journey and have been a teacher for almost 15 years. I went to college at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO. A few years into teaching I traveled to Chicago to study at one of the best schools for music education called VanderCook College of Music. I do have a passion for learning, so much that recently I started my Specialist Degree in administration last Spring.

Well, that's enough about me. But, let me leave you with this...I want you to know, as parents, your child is incredibly important to me. While I may not know all of them personally yet, I make knowing your child my goal throughout the year. My philosophy in teaching is to build relationships with kids and through that I believe students will learn more, faster and become incredibly successful. If you ever have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I want to work with you and your child, not against you. Always contact me with concerns and I'll do my best to resolve them.
