Raymond Academy of Engineering, Aldine ISD Vol. 1, No. 1
Message from the Principal
Raymond Academy has been off to a great year. Student attendance has been very good as everyone happily engages in learning. Parental involvement is extremely important in all aspects of your child’s education. One of the most important forms of parental involvement that you can provide is to make sure that your child comes to school every day and that he or she is in school by no later than 8:00 am daily. I would also like to stress the importance of reading at home. Reading everyday helps to build your child’s fluency and comprehension skills. These skills are essential for your child to be successful in every subject. Together, we can help your child reach his or her fullest potential.

Terrific News about Third Grade!
In reading, third grade teachers are encouraging our awesome students to read independently for longer periods of times. We want students to find interesting books at the reading level that they can get lost in! Beginning the second nine weeks, third grade students will be starting book clubs for reading homework! Each student will be assigned to a book club with other third graders in their class. Every night, students will be assigned specific pages to read. They may read independently or aloud to a family member at home. Our third graders are also very excited about the weekly math fact competition. Every week, third grade classrooms compete in a 2 minute addition and subtraction competition. The goal is to get as many facts correct in the two minutes. The class who answers the most correct gets to display the big, first place trophy in their room for that week. Second and third place also receive a trophy! So keep practicing those addition and subtraction math facts!
Moving Forward in Fourth Grade...
We started this year out with a bang and dove right into learning. This year, 4th grade has a great mix of creative teachers and determined students. We have already covered many topics in all our subjects. In math, we have learned about place value, decimals, and fractions; with multiplying and long division coming soon. Our awesome math specialist, Mrs. Knight, created a fact game that the students play to strengthen their math skills. Each class participates and the winning class gets a trophy over 2 feet tall!. In Science and Social Studies, we have been just as busy. We have done some awesome experiments in Science about Sinking and Floating and Magnets. In Social Studies, we have been exploring Texas regions, symbols, and the government. Do you know the state flower of Texas? We do! In Reading we have been working very hard on becoming a good reader. The students are learning that good readers often Stop and Think, Then Jot about what they have read. In writing we are learning the steps of the writing process, so that we can become accomplished writers. We are diligently working on our first narrative composition. The writing is amazing. Way to Go fourth grade students! We have also added some great teachers to the team. Mrs. Daniels and Mrs. Ramos both teach reading and writing while Mrs. Butler and Mrs. Winfree teach math, science, and social studies. Welcome to the 4th grade team!
Raymond Academy Educators are HIGHLY EFFECTIVE Teachers!
Kindergarten Update
This month in Kinder our students are TESTING: IOWA/Logramos, TPRI/Tejas Lee, Writing Benchmark and 9 week checkpoints. At this point and time students are writing by sounding out their letters. We encourage each and everyone of them to try their best and practice daily! Kindergarteners are having a blast counting up to 10, back and forth. They are also learning about Christopher Columbus and Hispanic Heritage. We have been exploring the world using our 5 senses and finding ways to sort objects by properties.
Facts About First Grade!
Our Fantastic First Graders are in high gear with building ways to increase our fluency along with comprehension. In math, we are working on composing and decomposing ways to make ten. We are excited about becoming better authors and illustrators. Please continue to read 20 minutes nightly, practice math facts, and allow them express their feelings through writing. Thanks for your continued support.
Sensational Second-graders...
Second grade has jump started the 2014-15 school year with a bang. Both Math and Reading are in full gear. Our professional staff are taking staff development in house at Raymond, District, and Region 4. The second grade level planning and implementation of The Daily 5 is a success, following the visit and positive feedback from Lisa Edwards on October 1. We continue to work diligently with our students on fluency, fact drills, vocabulary, and book bags. Social Studies is consistently working on citizenship as an ongoing skill. This nine weeks our students completed Science projects on States of Matter. The students were eager and excited to make their presentations. The second grade team is working hard to reach every child, every time!
