Important Update Regarding Coronavirus
Dear TUSD Parents and Guardians:
There are many concerns regarding the coronavirus, and Tustin Unified School District is taking every recommended precaution supported by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) and Orange County Department of Education. Our preventative measures include:
- Continued monitoring and identification of potentially sick students.
- All staff received District communication regarding daily precautions and TUSD guidelines for sick children.
- Students who have symptoms are sent to the office and screened by the health clerk. The school nurse is consulted if there are any additional concerns.
- Sick students are sent home per District guidelines, provided below.
- Staff are encouraged to share healthy habits to prevent the spread of germs at school.
- Staff are encouraged to routinely clean desks and other commonly used surfaces/areas on the campus.
- Antibacterial hand sanitizer dispensers are available on school campuses.
Based on the information from CDC and OCHCA, at this time, school events will take place as planned.
The OCHCA reports that, at this time, there appears to be minimal risk of acquiring 2019 novel coronavirus in public places. Most of the risk seems to be related to adults, the elderly, young babies and those with chronic illness or immune compromise. Tustin Unified will continue to monitor the recommendations of the CDC and OCHCA.
What you can do to help:
- Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently and practice the daily precautions below.
- Reinforce thorough hand-washing and good hygiene with your child.
- If your child is sick, keep them home and seek medical advice.
The CDC recommends taking these daily precautions for this or any other illness:
- Wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap for at least 15 seconds.
- Travelers who are sick should stay home and consult healthcare providers.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
- Practice other good health habits, such as disinfect surfaces, get plenty of sleep, keep active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
If your child is sick, please follow TUSD’s guidelines for keeping them at home:
- A temperature of 100 degrees or above – students must be fever-free without fever-reducing medication (such as Tylenol or Motrin) for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea – students may return to school 24 hours after last episode.
- Uncontrollable cough or wheezing or shortness of breath.
- Suspected communicable disease (i.e. chickenpox).
- Suspected infection.
- A rash of unknown origin – students may return to school when written authorization is received from the healthcare provider.
- Students must stay home for the first 24 hours on antibiotic therapy.
Thank you for helping TUSD keep children healthy.
