Welcome to the Year 5 newsletter!
Dear Parents,
We hope you are well!
Firstly, a BIG thank you to everyone who came to support the Year 5 Market Day on Monday in the school hall. I'm sure you will agree that the children did a fabulous job and, judging by the reaction of the rest of the school, there were many satisfied customers who left with lots of unique, hand crafted items. We'd also like to thank all of you for your support with the purchasing of resources, production process, rehearsing lines for the business presentations, researching market places and general motivation in helping the children to experience success during this unit.
Once they had tidied up their stalls, the children spent time calculating profits and reflecting on the whole 6 week inquiry. The total profit raised of $12,397.80 will be donated to our 4 house charities. A great example of Year 5 taking action - well done everybody!
For the remainder of the week we have started our final unit of inquiry of the year (details below) with some provocations and tuning in activities.
Have a great weekend,
The Year 5 Team

Unit of Inquiry
Our final UOI for the year is:
Sharing the Planet
Central Idea: Reaching a resolution during periods of conflict is influenced by the actions and reactions of all involved.
Lines of Inquiry:
● Causes of conflict (personal, local and global)
● Strategies used to resolve conflict
● Consequences of resolutions

Maths
We have been working through our unit on Pattern and Function. The unit conceptual understandings are:
· Functions are relationships or rules that uniquely associate members of one set with members of another set.
· By analysing patterns and identifying rules for patterns it is possible to make predictions.
· Patterns can often be generalised using algebraic expressions, equations or functions.
· Exponential notation is a powerful way to express repeated products of the same number.
The 'I Can' statements for the children are:
· Investigate and represent patterns using words, symbols, numbers, tables and graphs.
· Identify rules for patterns to predict future terms.
· Identify and describe factors and multiples of whole numbers.
· Solve equivalent number sentences involving multiplication and division to find unknown quantities.
A reminder that children can support their learning in the classroom by completing the Mathletics activities online. Well done to all the children who have already collected awards for their participation so far!
