Weekly Article: "Ask Me About..."
Each week the grade level teams will publish two to three statements for caregivers to use as conversation starters with their child(ren). Although the Scoop is a great place to see and discuss end-of-learning products, these "ask me about" conversation starters will help promote discussions about current learning. For additional questions to ask your child about school, please visit "Understood's" article:

Coffee that is not Just Coffee by S.W.
I looked closely outside of the car window and I was surprised to see a pet adoption center. “Mom can we go to the pet adoption center? It’s right there!” I pointed. Mom pressed the brake, put on her blinker, and turned into the parking lot of the adoption center. “Yay!” I shouted with a cute smile on my face.
As I listened I could hear barking dogs. Looking closely I noticed an adorable cream colored hamster. As I listened I could hear meowing cats, chirping birds, and running hamsters. When I touched the fuzzy soft hamster it felt hot from the sun. As I listened I could hear a hopping guinea Pig named Jr. I was surprised to see that Jr. was black and white. The warm fuzzy cute guinea pig hopped around his cage so many times I started to get dizzy. The worker walked toward us and she asked, ”Are you interested in one of our animals?” So I asked Mom, “Can we adopt the hamster?”she said’ “Yes”. I looked closely and I felt like he was the one. If you listened closely you could hear my mom say to the worker, “I think we will take her since she is the only hamster.” I listened quietly as the worker said,“You can take our hamster Coffee but we need to see the cage,” Suddenly I heard my mom say, ”All right keep that hamster in the back and we will go and get a picture of the cage.”
As we zipped home to get a picture I gasped to my mom, “I can’t wait to get a hamster named Coffee.” “Me too,” replied Mom. When we got back to the house I took a camera, walked up to the cage, and took the picture. I yelled, “I took the picture!” In the distance I could hear my mom reply with, “Hurry up!” As we raced back to the animal shelter I mumbled to my mom, “What happens if the hamster does not like me?” Listening quietly I heard my mom laugh, “She's going to love you as an owner.” Finally when we got to the animal shelter they took her out of the back and the wonderful worker sighed, “Today this hamster is for sale he has been here for a long time.”
The happy worker picked up the fuzzy hamster and let me touch the cuddly soft fur. Next we went into this bright room that the excited worker brought us to and she exclaimed, “This will be quick.” She asked my mom to sign some forms and then the wonderful worker declared, “Just $10 and we will pack Coffee in a box, but first we need to see the picture of the cage.” “Ok” replied Mom. We showed the worker the picture. At that moment my body started to feel excited but also I still was nervous. I still don’t know if she will like me. Just after we got home we put her in her new cage. She ran around her cage sniffing all of her new stuff. Just after that she ran into her igloo and started to take a nap.
The Day I Was Chased By a Shark By N.R.
Looking closely I noticed smooth shells on the beach. As I listened I could hear loud boats going through the harbor. I ran my hand along the rough sand and it stuck to my hand. I felt the burning sun on my back as I stood on the Jedi. I closed my eyes and heard loud honks from boats. The taste of the salt water made me throw up. The calm ocean caught my eye and I had to take a picture. I was surprised to see the Jetty being so long. I listened and heard crashing waves. The air was filled with the smell of gross seaweed.
Stomp, Stomp, Splash! The warm water was soothing to my sandy body. I relaxed as the tide pushed me toward the shore. As I was drifting to the shore I heard my friend screaming at me “Shark! Shark!” I looked behind me and there it was a great, white shark. The waves were vicious. I was swimming as fast as Usain Bolt. I was as scared as a mean pig in a smokehouse. I was getting closer to shore and my friend was screaming as loud as a goose. When my friend was yelling all I could only think about was if I would die or not. In the position I was in I was terrified. I was swimming as fast as light. I couldn’t believe my luck that day. I was getting closer to shore and I was having a heart attack while I was swimming away from a shark. I was so scared because it was salt water, and I couldn’t open my eyes underwater!
When we got back on shore we were so thankful to survive. My friend whispered in my ear “What the heck just happened?” We ran straight to the lifeguard stand. “We were swimming and got chased by a shark by the Jetty.” The lifeguard started shouting “Get of the water!” with his microphone.
I watched all the people swimming and running out of the water. Everybody was panicking and I thought in mind “We did this?” My face was getting red but we were laughing saying, “Whoa this is weird!” I looked closely at everyone looking and running away from the water.
Well now when I look back to that day I realize that this story could inspire kids to not go running off into the water without the guidance of an adult. The next time I am swimming I am going to make sure there is an adult to swim with me.Mt. Everest by C.D.
“Did you notice the cool ride Nina” ” Yes,” says Nina,“It is very cool.” “Do you think it is going to be fast or scary?”
When I breathed in I could smell clean fresh air as I was getting in line for the fast roller coaster. The screaming people on the scary roller coaster caught my eye. As I listened I could hear people screaming on the way down the dip. Looking closely I noticed a steep fall and very dark tunnel. I was surprised to see a Yeti at the end of the ride. I feel nervous but excited for the ride.
Nina and I walked to our seat, the metal bar lifted, and we climbed in and sat down. The bar feels hot. You have to grab the handle until it clicks so your are safe in your seat. I felt butterflies in my stomach as the roller coaster slowly began to move. “Nina I’m nervous,” I whispered. “It's okay,” she replied as she patted my leg. Suddenly we began to slowly climb a steep hill. My eyes bugged out as we reached the top of the hill and I saw the steep fall. As we went down I put my hands in the air and screamed as loud as a crow. Next we went into a cave with a Yeti trying to tear up the track. I looked closely at the big white rough Yeti as he roared at all the people. “Nina look it's a Yeti! Are we going to crash?” I gasped. “No,” says Nina. I looked closely at the broken track. Then we got off. “Nina, can we go on again?” I asked. “That ride was awesome!” “What do you think?” asked Nina. “Yeah!” I replied.
Stayed at a Friend's House by H.K.
Knock, knock, “Hi Mya.” I shouted “Oh hi! Do you want to come in?” asked Mya. “Yeah!”
The air was filled with the smell of delicious dinner cooking. I stared at the
gold trophy on the table as I walked into the large living room. As I listened
I could hear Mya’s parents talking to one another. I gasped when I saw how big
her deck was. I was surprised to see how huge Mya’s room was. The comforters
felt so soft and had geometric design. I touched the fluffy pillows and they
seemed squishy. I rubbed my fingers across the soft blanket and it felt so
furry. The blankets, sheets, and comforters all smelled like laundry detergent
and I loved it.
“Hmm what should we do?” Mya asked curiously. “I don’t know.” I replied. “Oh I think
we should paint!” she yelled. “Mya we could do that” I said calmly. “Maybe we could clean your room,” I suggested. “Nah we could do that later too,” agreed Mya. Suddenly at the same time we said, “We could make a fort!”
Standing in Mya’s living room we decided to move the coffee table.
I noticed the heavy feeling of the table. Then we moved the couch across the
room. We also decided to move the little chair next to the couch. Mya and I then
grabbed pillows, comforter, sheets, and blankets and threw them on the couch.
After that we went outside and grabbed long thick sticks. Next we put the
sticks in big blue bins so we wouldn’t make a mess in the living room.
After that we got some selfie sticks and that was our main base for the fort. Just
after that Mya and I grabbed the comforters and laid them flat in the middle of
the room. Next we stood up the sticks all around the center. While Mya held the
sticks up I threw the blankets over the sticks. “Hey Mya my stomach is
growling,” I mumbled. “Hmmm me too?” Mya said. “We forgot to eat dinner!” we yelled
at the same time.
So after dinner we decided to go to bed. “Wait!” I yelled. “What?” Mya yelled
back. “We forgot that we were going to sleep in the fort,” I replied. To get in the fort Mya
and I had to crouch down and waddle. After that we lay down the big comforters
and put blankets over the comforters. Then we lay the pillows against the
couch. “Mya didn’t we forget something?” I mumbled. “I think it was the stuffed
animals!” Mya exclaimed. “Yeah, let’s go get them,” I giggled. After we got the
stuffed animals we lay down in the fort and snuggled with them. I ran my hand
along the stuffed dragon and realized it was two different colors, blue and green. I felt my eyes start to close. “Tomorrow morning we can paint our bottles,” Mya whispered.
As I fell asleep I thought about my friendship with Mya and I hope we can be
friends forever.
My First Time On A Roller Coaster by B.R.
At Canobie Lake Park I was surprised to see a blue roller coaster that goes upside down. “Are you excited Lainy?” I asked. “Yeah I am!” Lainy said. “I am too,” I giggled. “I'm so scared.” Lainy mumbled. “Why are you scared?” I asked. “It looks really fast!” Lainy gasped.
The air was filled with the smell of sweet vanilla ice cream. I closed my eyes and heard kids and adults yelling. I spotted a $5 bill on the ground and gave it to the owner. I ran my hand along the metal fence and jumped in surprise when the roller coaster passed by. It was hard to ignore the sound of the very loud fireworks.
We climbed into the first seat we saw. Then we grabbed the rope and pulled it across our bodies. Little did I know my seatbelt was not tight enough. We slowly climbed a steep hill. I shivered when I caught sight of the loopty loop. When we dropped I yelled at the top of my lungs. After that I ran my hand along my seatbelt and realized it was loose. Then I yelled, “Lainy my seatbelt is loose”. Lainy asked, “Really?” “Yeah it is!” I replied. “Do you think you're going to fall off?” exclaimed Lainy. “Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!” I shouted . Lainy grabbed my seatbelt and tried to buckle it but she couldn't do it. When I saw her trying to buckle it my eyes bugged out. I was breathing deeply I was so scared. Lainy was terrified for me. “Bri!” she yelled. When we were on the loopty loop gravity was pulling me down. My body was off the seat for a split second. Luckily the ride was almost over. When the ride was done I sighed in relief.
When we got off the ride Lainy and I ran to our parents crying. ”Never again!” We sobbed. Next time I go on a rollercoaster I will remember to tighten my seatbelt before the ride starts.
Ms. Lampert's Classroom News:
Mrs. Lampert’s classes have been hard at work writing mathematical poetry. Students applied many of the poetic devices they have learned about, including rhyme scheme, line/word/syllable count, similes, metaphors, and imagery while communicating their mathematical understandings in a clear and concise way.
Fourth Grade News:
To coincide with their angles and lines math units, some fourth grade teams designed and constructed gold holes that met many requirements. Photos show the process of working together to complete the goal. Other photos include 2nd graders trying them out!
PreK News: Eggs and Chrysalis
This week our caterpillars turned into chrysalises. We put them in our butterfly net. When we get back from vacation, we should have beautiful butterflies. Students are preparing for our planting unit by playing with soil in our sandbox. On Friday, we will plant seeds. Hopefully, they will sprout by the time we get back from April vacation. In the area of science, we connected packing peanuts in order to form structures. At the art table, we decorated baskets in order to collect eggs for our annual hunt. In the afternoon, we collected eggs with our book buddies.
At the academic tables, we sequenced the life cycle of a butterfly and the life cycle of a plant. Later, we created patterns using spring manipulatives.
Book buddies help PreK students in their egg hunt! Thank you!
Ms. Julin's News:
We ended our Moon theme by creating a video of moon and space facts that we have learned.
