Bring on the New Year
As Linden Community Schools (LCS) looks forward to the 2020s, we need to keep reminding ourselves of the value of education. Our mission is to educate, nurture, and develop all learners to be self-directed and to strive for excellence with confidence and integrity by working cooperatively with students, staff, parents, and community. Moving forward, LCS remains focused on creating a successful environment for every student.
In 2018, LCS developed a strategic plan that helps guide the district in the current years but also looks to guide the district into the next generation. LCS has five goal areas that we remain committed to.
■ Goal Area #1: Student achievement and engagement. We want to continue building dedicated learning environments that allow students and staff to engage in diverse learning that promotes the whole child and 21st-century skills.
■ Goal Area #2: Facility improvements (infrastructure). This goal keeps the focus on creating and maintaining educational facilities that provide a safe, state-of-the-art learning environment.
■ Goal Area #3: Educational and instructional technology. Linden is committed to the advancement of technology that will enhance opportunities for students to compete in the 21st-century global marketplace.
■ Goal Area #4: Sustainability. Operate in a fiscally responsible manner that allows LCS to provide advancements to programs, systems, facilities, and personnel.
■ Goal Area #5: Communication. Communicate the value of services LCS provides to all stakeholders within the district to effectively maintain an accomplished learning institution.
LCS will remain committed to the students, staff, and community of the Linden school district. We will continue to provide a successful environment that is a benefit to all of our stakeholders, and we are thankful for the support of our community.

Naming Linden Middle School Gymnasium
A request has been made to Linden Community Schools for naming the Linden Middle School Gymnasium. According to Board Policy 7250, Naming of Schools and School Facilities, the Board recognizes the prominence and permanence of a school or school facility in the community and the importance of establishing appropriate selection criteria and procedures that ensure students, staff, parents, and community participation is part of the process in selecting a name.
In establishing criteria, the Board shall consider consistency with other school names at the elementary, middle, or high school level, as appropriate. The Board shall refrain from naming schools or facilities after individuals who are living or recently deceased. The Board shall consider the names of deceased persons who are clearly identifiable and widely recognized as having made outstanding contributions to the community, state, nation or world. The Board shall also consider the geographical location of the school or facility, the proximity of the school or facility to recognize features of the area, valued concepts or principles and relevant historical events.
If you would like to submit a suggestion for naming the Linden Middle School Gymnasium, please complete the following information (click link) by January 31, 2020. All submitted suggestions will be reviewed by the Naming Schools and School Facilities Committee. A recommendation, from the committee, will be made to the Board for consideration.

Promoting Positive School Climate Initiative (year 2 of 3) at LCS
We are currently in year two of Promoting Positive School Climates - PPSC. The focus for year two is to understand and identify student behaviors both externalizing (physical) and internalizing (social/emotional) and use data to proactively determine which students need additional social-behavioral support. Each building has determined areas of need within their school and has identified key staff members to provide such support. To help identify students needing additional supports, each building will be administering the Student Risk Screening Scale (SRSS). This survey is completed by the classroom teacher and intended to be administered three times each year. It will be used to identify students needing Tier 2 social or behavioral interventions.
The PPSC team is also working on a Check-In/Check-out or CICO system as one way to provide support. The CICO is a positive support, time-limited intervention. The goal is to support students to be more successful in schools by teaching self-management skills and getting adult attention in meaningful ways. CICO is not a punishment. It provides at-risk students positive interactions with adults, promotes student ownership of their behaviors, and provides positive daily feedback between school and home. Here is a sample of the CICO-Linden Elementary.

2019 Linden Follies
Angel Tree helps to furnish gifts for LCS students who may go without for Christmas. The money raised will stay within our community.
Christmas Express also uses the donated monies to furnish food baskets for LCS families during the holidays. Again, the money raised stays within our community.
Without your support, this type of giving would not be possible. Next year will be the 25th anniversary of the Follies, so start planning now!!
