Hello, KHS families.
Here is the Bobcat Connection for the upcoming week. On Thursday, our students were given report cards to bring home. We have two more grading periods before the school year ends. It's important that we stay the course to finish strong. If you would like a parent-teacher conference, please do not hesitate to contact us. We consider ourselves partners in our students' education.

Krum Education Foundation Announces Grant Opportunities for Students
Krum ISD Education Foundation (KEF) is proud to announce the introduction of two new programs: Student Enrichment Grants and Teacher Scholarship Grants! KEF is currently accepting applications for these new programs, as well as, the existing Technology Grant and Instructional Initiative programs. Application deadline is March 10, 2017. Khan Academy
The Khan Academy is a wonderful resource for students and parents. Students may receive free tutoring for the subject/subjects they are struggling with. Students can also connect their College Board ID to the Khan Academy and receive free tutoring for the SAT/ACT College Entrance Exams. The success rate has been overwhelming.

4 Year College/University right out of High School: Ask your counselor for an information sheet or go on-line for entry requirements and application deadline. If you have a score on a college entrance exam that qualifies you for entry, apply. Do not re-test for entry. You must be accepted to be eligible to speak with the Financial Aid Officer. If the Financial Aid Officer tells you to re-test (to improve your scores for more scholarship money), retest at that time.
Community College: Open admission, meaning that you may enter if you test. You may
submit a college entrance exam (ACT/SAT), or TSI (locally administered entrance exam). Every community college is different. Contact admissions or look on-line for
required test scores.
Transfer Student: A student who completes 30 college credit hours (not including Dual Credit) at an institution of higher education, may transfer to another institution of higher education on their grade-point-average alone. They are not required to present high school transcripts, GPA, or test scores.
Request a Transcript be sent to a College/University or Scholarship Program: Go to www.krumisd.net and click on Krum High School - Departments - Counselor Corner - Request a Transcript. Complete the form and submit it to our Registrar, Mrs. Morrow.
Apply Texas. Students may go to www.applytexas.org and apply to any Texas college/university. Be sure to keep your username/password in a safe place. Counselors do not have access.
Housing for College. Some colleges/universities require all freshman to live in the dorms (except those that live in the community and commute). Some do not have a policy. You need to check out the housing on campus as soon as you apply. All deposits are refundable if you do not attend.
The University of North Texas will automatically accept all Krum High School graduates who are in the top 20% of the class.
FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student Aid
This is a form that students complete to apply for federal financial aid. Our government will determine your eligibility by your family income and what school you plan to attend. You may qualify for up to $5,815 in college grants. Complete this form now.
College For All Texans. This is a comprehensive website for financial aid for Texas students. Google: College For All Texans. Every parent/student should review this site. www.fastweb.com This website will serve as your personal secretary and match the information that you provide on a profile form to all national scholarships. They will then e-mail the scholarship information to you. This service is free. Be sure to change your profile every summer because there are scholarships for entering freshman students as well as graduate students. This is a web site that you will want to keep throughout your college career. There are several websites that will provide this service for you. Many are listed on the Counselor’s Scholarship Page.
Krum High School Scholarship Newsletter: Go to www.krumisd.net, click on Krum High School -Departments - Counselor’s Corner - Scholarships. Watch this space weekly - we will publish all scholarships that are mailed to our school as well as additional national scholarships. The “local” scholarships will not be announced until spring.
Scholarship Opportunity
Last year Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) distributed approximately $1.66 million dollars in scholarships. We are pleased to announce another cycle of opportunities through our Winter 2017 Scholarships! Applications are available now on our online portal. The attached document may be used to guide students through the application process.
The majority of our scholarship applications will deadline according to the following timeline:
· Deadline 1: March 1, 2017
· Deadline 2: April 1, 2017
· Deadline 3: May 1, 2017

Denton ATC 2017-18 Opportunities
Mrs. Borchardt and Mrs. Smiley have provided alinks to give you information about the dual credit and ATC presentations for rising juniors and seniors. Parents are encouraged to watch the videos and contact their students' counselors with any questions. Mrs. Borchardt and Mrs. Smiley are happy to set up appointments to meet with students and parents as well to go over this information. Students met with Mrs. Smiley and Mrs. Borchardt on February 7th and 9th during advisory and watched the ATC presentation, asked questions and picked up related materials such as flyers for informational meetings held at the ATC and the ATC application.
On February 14th and 16th students will meet with Mrs. Smiley and Mrs. Borchardt to watch the dual credit presentation, ask questions and take home the dual credit checklist with enrollment steps and deadlines. These presentations and handouts will be available on the KHS counselor's corner webpage under the ATC and Dual Credit tabs.

All Academic UIL competitors please come to the Gym during advisory period on Thursday February 23 to take a quick photo for the yearbook.
On Monday, February 27th, the Yearbook staff will take a group photo of the K-12 Seniors during Advisory.
Students planning to attend the ATC next year need to give your name to your counselor so that we can make plans to register you.
Also, remember, if you are registering for Cosmetology you must attend a meeting on February 28th at the ATC from 6:30-8:00. One parent must attend with you.

Coke Sales: Orders for cases of Coca Cola products are available from all juniors and Ms. Lightfoot. Cost per case (24 bottles) is $22 and orders will be taken until February 28.

The 3rd ANNUAL KRUM SPECIAL OLYMPIC PANCAKE SUPPER will be held on MARCH 7, 2017 from 5pm-8pm @HATTIE DYER ELEMENTARY. Proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics Team.
