Happy Summer Barnard Families,

With the end of the school day today, we have officially closed out the 2020-2021 school year! It's been a wild, unpredictable 15 months and I want to once again commend everyone, students, families, and staff, for your flexibility and the Herculean effort everyone put into making the situation work for our kids.

Have a safe, happy summer recess and everyone here at Henry Barnard School is hopeful we'll see you in a more typical year starting in the fall.

Returning School Materials

If you still have school materials such as books, math manipulatives, an iPad, your possession, the office will be open for returns over the next two days, Thursday and Friday, between 9:30 and 2:00. Just ring the doorbell and Miss Gina or Miss Sarah will be out to help you. Also, when you return your iPad, we will have your child's report card ready to send home with you.

Summer Learning Program

Information about the Summer Learning Program will be coming via mail directly from Central Office. The program is being held at our sister school, Prudence Crandall. Thank you to the families who decided to take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity to help students develop their academic skills.

Academic Skills and Summer Vacation

Even if you weren't able to take advantage of this year's Summer Learning Program, it's important to help our kids keep their hard won academic skills sharp. A book before bed each night, some questions about what they read/what you read to them, and then slipping a math problem/fact into everyday conversation can often be enough to keep kids' skills from regressing. Research shows that by the ninth grade, “summer learning loss during elementary school accounts for two-thirds of the achievement gap in reading between different groups of students". (National Summer Learning Association)

Keep those skills up in just minutes a day. It's worth it!

Diving Into Diversity with Our Partners at KITE

How do you define “mom” in your family? Mom can be someone who gave birth to you, or perhaps it’s a caregiver, step-mother, or mother figure! Thank you to our guest reader, Megan Lanouette who is reading, “The Mommy Book” by Todd Parr.

Thanks once again to our amazing PTO; members of the outgoing, as well as the incoming board. We couldn't do all of the wonderful things that happen for our Big Cats without your hard work dedication!

Be safe, be happy, and we'll see you in September!
