My Story Challenge
Feb 14 2014 Media Array Day
What is My Story?
My Story - Book Maker for Kids is a book creation app, mostly geared toward K-6 students. Authors can illustrate their own pictures within the app, insert or take actual pictures, and either record or type text onto the pages of their books. Books can be viewed and listened to online*, in an ePub reader like iBooks or in the app itself. Planning for a My Story book is VERY similar to planning for a PowerPoint - it's an easy way to get tech-tentative teachers creating on the iPad. So if you've had students create a PowerPoint previously, use My Story!
You are going to write a book on the topic of your choosing.
Topic ideas could include, but are not limited to:
- Valentine's Day
- Recapping an event
- Example for an upcoming unit
Feel free to get up and move around, especially when recording audio.
Using My Story
- Open My Story and create a new author.
- Click on you and then "Add a Book."
- Enter your title and choose a book cover color. Click "Create."
- Create your book cover. Add an image or draw your cover. Record yourself saying the title of your book and the group authors.
- Once finished with your cover, click on the book in the lower left hand corner.
- Click the "Add Page" button, then click the new page to begin editing it.
- On your second page, add a different type of image than you did on your cover. Be sure to record audio.
- Continue adding pages until your story is complete!
- Once you are completely finished, click the "Done" button in the upper left hand corner.
- Tap on your book, then choose how you are going to share it.
- TIP: When working with a group of students, I will typically choose the purple "link" button (because students iPads don't have email), then log into Gmail via Safari on the iPad, and email myself a link to the book.
Requirements for your challenge
- You have 30 minutes.
- We'll draw for partners that day. You only need to create one book on one iPad.
- You must include some sort of image on each page - At least one picture downloaded from the web and/or taken with the iPad and one drawn with the built in tools.
- Audio or text on each page. In your book, you must have at least one page with audio and one with text. It can't be all of one and none of the other.
Finished?
Email a link to Josh, either via "copy link" or "email link" icons. We'll have an "Author's Talk" at approximately 11:45 am.
Full disclosure
This idea was stolen from Aurora Public Schools.
Thanks Mr. Badura!
*When viewing the book online on a PC, Chrome is currently the only browser that supports the book audio.
