CSCS Elementary Reopening Update
August 23rd, 2020
Important Message from Mr. Anderson
As we continue to prepare to open the school building for the 2020-21 school year I feel it is important to communicate everything that is going into this planning process.
There has also been a lot of questions that have been posed regarding the school and Department of Health response for when a child or adult shows Covid symptoms at school. Mrs. Hagenbuch and our school physician, Dr. Worley, created a video to explain this to our community. It is embedded in this Smore below.
We will continue to plan for the reopening of school and be flexible as more information is presented to us from NYSED and the Department of Health.
We are also looking at building some form of after school program in the elementary this school year to support our families. There is a link in this Smore to complete a survey as to how we may be able to evolve our after school program in a way that is more helpful for our students and parents during this challenging time.
Looking ahead: We will be planning Zoom orientations for our grade levels prior to the start of school and will be continuing to send newsletter updates.
Mr. Anderson will be holding another Parent "Town Hall" meeting this coming Wednesday, August 26th at 6:00pm via Zoom. A link to this will be sent out to parents the day of the meeting.

What will students be doing on "Remote" Days
Through many conversations and parent feedback, we at school understand that due to every families unique circumstances that providing flexibility is very important. This is why we worked very hard to have as little time strictly scheduled as possible. We this in mind, the only weekly scheduled time for ALL students to log onto Zoom and attend class will be on Mondays with their entire class (All teams! Red, White, and Blue!). Each grade level will have a specific time to log on so that they can, in real time, talk to their classmates and teacher. This time will be shared prior to school starting. This will also be a critical time for students to hear about the lesson objectives of the week, assignments due, and to have fun communicating with their classmates.
Everyday Expectation - Every student must log on to his/her digital classroom (Seesaw or Google Classroom) and complete the attendance form prior to 2pm.
Mondays - Required classroom Zoom to keep connections with the entire class and teacher, and to get the lesson objectives for the week and assignments that will be due.
Tuesday/Thursday and Wednesday/Friday Remote Days - These days will allow parents and students flexibility in which they can help support their child at any time during the day because the lessons will be pre-recorded and available on Seesaw (PreK-2) and Google Classroom (3-6) along with the assignments and teacher feedback. The only time requirement on these days is that every student must log on to his/her digital classroom and click on the attendance form so attest that they are "in attendance" for the school day by 2pm. It is a state requirement that the school must take attendance every day. We will be practicing all of these procedures and processes with our students on the first day of school!
Since teachers will actively have students in their classrooms Tuesday-Friday; therefore making themselves unavailable for students learning remotely from home, there will be a set time for "office hours" via zoom and telephone in which teaching assistants and special education teachers will be available to help students and parents. You will be notified of these times as the school year begins.
Individualized Expectations - In order to provide a multi-tiered system of support for our students, your child's teacher/special education teacher/grade level Teaching Assistant may reach out to set up specific times with your child to hold small group Zoom meetings to support differentiated and individualized instruction as is needed.
After School Program - We are also investigating how we can run an after school program designed to support students and parents. There is a survey in this Panthergram, please fill it out to give us ideas of what that program could look like for our school community.
Introducing P.A.W.S.
Our PBIS team has met and created PAWS posters along with formal lesson plans for our faculty to teach and reinforce PAWS in our school! As parents, you can start at home before we start school to get your child acclimated to PAWS and being safe around others!

Important Message from Nurse Mullikin
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Hope this finds you safe and healthy.
To say that this has been a strange year doesn't even come close.
I just want to touch base with my families on some of the end of year things from the health office. And to make you aware of some things for the upcoming school year.
To begin:
1. Vaccinations- New York State passed a law (PHL 2164) after the 2019 measles outbreak, that has changed the way we look at immunizations.
Most immunizations are part of a series, or require boosters that are given on a schedule. The state is very strict with adherence to that schedule.
By Law a child CAN NOT attend school if 14 or more days have elapsed from the recommended date for a vaccine
I am in the process of mailing out letters to let you know what immunizations your child will need in order to start school in September. I have enclosed the reports from the NYS database that will show you what immunizations your child needs and what the recommended date is. In most situations the 14 day grace period has already passed. Meaning the child CAN NOT start school without having received them.
We can no longer accept and appointment date as an indication that the child will receive the vaccine.
All children entering kindergarten must have a second MMR (measle, mumps, rubella) and Varicella (chicken pox) booster.
Children age 11+ entering the 6th grade must have a Tdap booster.
Children that are less than 11 entering 6th grade, must receive that Tdap booster within 14 calendar days of their birthday, or by law they must be excluded from school. I will call you to come pick them up. It's the law.
Children entering 7th grade and 12th grade must receive a Meningitis vaccine.
Please get these done over the summer and get copies to the health office before school starts in September to avoid delays with your child being able to start classes. Again we can not accept an upcoming appointment date. After 14 calendar days your child will be excluded from school.
2. Physicals- Law requires all students entering school for the first time ie. Pre-K, Kindergarten (if your child did not attend Pre-K) and new enrollments to have a current physical examination on file in the health office.
In addition to the above, students in grades 1,3,5,7,9, and 11 are required to have a current physical on file.
If you child received a physical after sept. 1, 2019 that counts as an acceptable physical.
If you have an appointment scheduled, please notify us of the date, and send a copy in as soon as it is done.
If by December 31st, 2020 we have not received a copy of a physical for your child, he or she will be scheduled to get a physical done by our school physician.
And finally:
3. Medications
As needed medications- In the elementary building, I packaged them up, with a blank order sheet for next year and sent them home with your child's last work pick up and personal belongings Thursday 5/28/20. If your child will need these medications next year, please get the order filled out and signed by your physician and bring the order and medication in next year. Please don't forget to sign yourself up on the upper third of the consent.
Routine or daily meds-I have mailed out new orders/consents for daily medications that I administer here at school. Please have your physician complete them and return them over the summer by mail or fax 607-5279866 elementary building, or 607-527-9860 for the high school building.
Remember to sign your signature also where I put the *. I have filled them out for the most part. If there is a change in medication or dosage the physician will have to do a new order.
If you have any questions or concerns feel free to email me @ kmullikin@cscsd.org. I will be in and out of the office throughout the summer but do not have specific days. I will check messages when I'm in the office.
Hope you have a great summer. And more than anything here's hoping that we never have to experience this again.

More Help For Families - ProAction
If you or someone you know has been affected financially by COVID-19, WIC may be able to help. WIC (The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) provides pregnant women, new and breastfeeding moms, and children under age 5 with healthy food, breastfeeding support, nutrition advice, and referrals to other services.
Steuben and Yates County residents are encouraged to reach out to our WIC Help Specialist, Amanda, either by text/call: (607)-377-4313 or via email at: DowdleA@proactioninc.org for more information or to find out if they may be eligible.

ProAction Inc. - FIRST AND FOREMOST: CHILD CARE
Finding Child Care: We understand you are fielding a lot of questions about child care. Please direct families to call our Child Care Aware program at 607-776-2126 and ask for Michelle Smith. Michelle is there as a resource to connect families with child care options that fit their needs. If we can get people to use this as the primary way that parents seek information on child care, it also serves as a data collection mechanism to gain insight on the particulars of the need in our community. Establishing the need will help us as we work with partners on defining creative solutions and accessing the resources to implement them. We plan to involve you in those conversations as strategies are being brainstormed.
Unemployment - Loss of job due to Covid-19
Below are resources to help:
Go to the website at www.labor.ny.gov to begin the unemployment process. Create a NY.-gov ID to get the process started online. From there, a Department of Labor representative will call you directly to confirm details and get unemployment started.
Call in number is 888-209-8124 (this takes longer and with large call volumes it is difficult to get through)
Best way is to go online through the website www.labor.ny.gov
and create a NY.-gov ID to get started online
