Newsletter Term 3 Week 9
St Patrick's School Masterton 20th September 2022
TUMUAKI/PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa, nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa!
In many countries around the world, the Catholic Church celebrates October as the Month of Mission. Prayers are offered for the missionary work of the Church as inspired by Matthew 28:19 "Go and make disciples of all nations." We are all encouraged to be more aware that we all are missionaries, find what gives meaning to our lives, and share it. Perhaps when you are sitting around the dinner table or at home on the couch it would be a good opportunity to talk with your child about how they can be a missionary and show care, give hope or be courageous towards others.
Last week at school I had the pleasure of attending the New Zealand Principals Federation conference in Christchurch. This was an awesome opportunity to spend time with colleagues discussing current educational issues and learning from inspirational speakers.
A key take-away from the conference, forwarded on to me by a colleague was some key thoughts that focused on the children we educate at our schools. In particular making sure we listen to their voice, of which some key points raised throughout the conference included:
Let them speak and learn in their language – Te Reo.
Get their names right. Say them correctly and work at it until they are right.
Sort out toilets so there are gender neutral options.
Be prepared to change things at school so learning can work better for students.
Don’t stand by and let students bully students. Help them when they are struggling with peer relationships.
Listen to students’ ideas and then commit to actioning them.
Don’t expect them to always be perfect. They’re not – and neither are we.
Accept them for who they are, not just the ‘best version of themselves’ – to be a perfect person 24/7 is exhausting.
Know that learning is 24/7 – and not all the best learning happens at school.
Meeting inspiring role models inspires them to become better people.
Believe in them – and back them, even when they muck up.
Finally, a request for whānau of our current Year 6 students. If you have not yet done so can you please enrol your child, as soon as possible, at their next school ready for 2023. Schools are busy organising their Year 7 intake of students and knowing how many students will be attending is crucial in organising their staffing. Thank you for your support.

Principle: Solidarity
Enduring Understanding: We are all one human family, loving each other as we walk together
Whakatauki: Na koutou i tangi, na tatau katoa/ When you cry, your tears are shed by us all
- Further detail for parents/ caregivers - We are one human family. Our responsibilities to each other transcend national, racial, economic and ideological differences. We are called to work globally for justice. The principle of solidarity requires of us that we not concern ourselves solely with our own individual lives. We need to be aware of what is going on in the world around us.
Te Reo Māori Language Learning

Divine River Workshop 21st September
All year 5 & 6 girls are invited to the Divine River workshop on the 21st of September during school time.
This is a one-hour introductory workshop that explores reusable vs disposable and the reasons tamariki could consider choosing a sustainable approach to period care.
These workshops complement PE and health curriculums and align with the Hauora model. The workshop is delivered face to face in class, as the hands-on interactive learning experience develops a stronger connection for the tamariki with the subject.
The workshop will be delivered by the Divine River project team of Lisa Birrell and Joanne Heir. Lisa and Jo have recently run successful workshops at schools including Makoura College, Carterton School and South End School.
If you want more information, look on the Divine River facebook page.
If you don’t wish your daughter to attend please contact your daughters hub teachers.
