Kindergarten
Hello kindergarten parents welcome to a wonderful start this year. We are excited to inform you that we have been working with numbers from 1-10 since the beginning of the year and will now begin learning about Geometric shapes. We encourage you to continue practicing their numbers at home and highly encourage practicing their numbers up to 20. As for Reading, we have started the year by learning the whole alphabet and focusing on one letter a week. We will also be learning about plants, animals, and the importance of how to survive, along with needs and wants. Thanks for all your hard work and just remember, if you practice their letters at home, they will learn to read a lot faster. The Kindergarten Team
1st Grade
In first grade we are working on an introduction to place value through addition and subtraction within 20. In this module we will be moving towards learning more efficient counting using decomposition and composition: strategies which we call “make a ten” or “take from a ten” in the classroom. This module serves as a bridge for our students from problem solving within ten, to working with teen numbers, and eventually in later modules, within 100.
2nd Grade
We are currently working on unit 3 in our reading curriculum. This unit is all about plants and animals in their habitats. The focus is how living things get what they need to survive. Math is all about exploring addition and subtraction within 200. Students can demonstrate this by drawing models and writing equations. You can enforce this skill at home by reviewing basic math facts 1-10 (flashcards). We highly encourage students to keep reading at home!
3rd Grade
For reading we will be working on the following strategies:
· main idea and details
· text and graphic features
· comparing and contrasting two types of text
· Making inferences
· finding text evidence
· asking and answering questions
· determining the meaning of domain specific vocabulary
Writing:
· We will be working on writing an informative report.
Phonics:
· r-controlled words (ar, or)
· r-controlled words (er, ir, ur)
· Closed syllable patterns
Math:
· Measuring weight and liquid volume in metric units.
· Rounding to the nearest ten and hundred.
· Two and three digit measurements addition using the standard algorithm.
4th Grade
This month we are learning about Key details and summary's in reading. The book we are reading also has a lot to do with nature and how we react to it. For math we are working on Perimeters and Area.
Agendas go home every Friday, please sign them on the weekend. Arteaga's students have homework everyday reading homework Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Math homework on Tuesdays and Thursday.
This year 4th grade will also have a state assessment in social studies but it is not the typical assessment we take in reading and math. This assessment is classroom based so the students will be creating a project based on a guiding question presented by the teacher. Parents can expect to receive further information on this at a later date.
Special Education
Ideas to do with your children (Reading)
Use your newspaper to do a scavenger hunt: Give your child a list of things to find in today's newspaper. Here are some ideas:
- ·Find 3 compound words.
- · Find 3 rhyming words.
- · Three words that begin with "w".
Parents, teachers, and peers influence a child’s life with parents and teachers having the most impact. Making time to read each day with your child and talking about books models habits that readers do and in turn children mimic.
Ideas to do with your children (math)
- Encourage your child to figure out answers to real-life situations: “We have one can of tuna and we need five. How many more do we need to buy?”
- Ask questions that involve equal sharing. For example, “Seven children share 49 baseball cards. How many cards does each child get?”
- Count and pair objects found around the house and determine whether there’s an odd or even number of items
Music
Third Grade will work on music composition by writing their own songs using notes on a staff. Fourth Grade will also work on analyzing and writing new lyrics to popular songs. Last week, First Grade created their own rhythms and now they will begin turning them into Ostinatos. Finally, Fourth and Second Grade will soon begin working on their December Concert, "The Big Chill."
Physical Education
For PE we are working on manipulation and throwing /catching skills.
Art
So far this year in art we have covered the 3 Primary Colors, red, yellow, and blue, the 3 Secondary Colors, orange, green, and purple, as well as how to create the 3 secondary colors by mixing the primary colors together (blue + yellow = green, etc.)
We have also been exploring various types of lines (curvy, zigzag, dotted, dashed, etc.) We also learned that a pattern can be anything repeated to make a design (shapes, colors, lines, anything!) We then used our new lines to create patterns. Next, we will be moving onto exploring textures.
Science
Happy Fall Y’all,
This month in science the kindergarteners are learning how to keep our earth clean by reducing, reusing, and recycling. They are also being made aware of how humans have an impact on our Earth. First graders are learning how science mimics nature, in other words, “biomimicry”. An example of biomimicry is the bike helmet. Scientists looked at a turtle as a model and realized their shell protects their body and thought if we put a shell on the heads of bike riders their heads would be protected from falls. That is how the bike helmet was invented. Second graders just finished learning about the different ways seeds travel and will soon start learning about the diversity in many different habitats. 3rd graders are researching animal groups and the advantages and disadvantages these animals have living in groups. 4th graders are wrapping up the unit on how an animal’s senses are important to its survival.
Library
Students are learning how to use different school apps during library class. They are using Showbie to do library lessons and Epic and myON to read eBooks on the iPads. The older students will start using Destiny Discover and a new app called Beanstack. Destiny Discover is the library app where students can find books in the library, use the online encyclopedias, and read library eBooks. Beanstack is a motivational app that allows students to earn badges for the number of books they read or the number of minutes they read.
Students will continue working on book skills and research during the 2nd nine weeks of school.
