Burnette Blast
November 2021
What an eventful October!
October was a month full of fun events and celebrations! I am also so proud of all the hard work and learning I am seeing in classrooms! Kindergarteners are learning to read, students are coding robots, and 2nd-grade students are tackling 2-digit subtraction. Thank you for all your support. When we partner together our students can achieve anything!
Our students and staff had a great Red Ribbon week! We were reminded to Stop Bullying and to Say No to Drugs as we wore silly socks, crazy hair, team jerseys (Go Braves!), and superhero day! Check out the pictures below.
We also had a very successful United Way fundraiser with our Burnette Pet Idol competition! Our Burnette family raised over $2000! Thank you for all your support! Here are the top five winners:
5th place: Marvel, Ms. Fender's dog
4th place: Tinkerbell, Ms. White's dog
3rd place: Rolo, Ms. Guynn's dog
2nd place: Hendrix, Ms. Anderson's dog
1st place: Charlie, Ms. Bell's dog
Unfortunately, we did have to cancel our Movie Under the Stars event. We were very disappointed but the weather did not permit us to have an outdoor event. PTA is planning on rescheduling for the Spring.
If you haven't already, please follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter (links are at the bottom). We are posting updates and fun pictures each week that I know you will want to see! If there is anything I can do to support you, please don't hesitate to reach out: 678-546-2170, sally.lehmann@gcpsk12.org.

Media Center Updates
Author Visit Update: Unfortunately, during his time in Atlanta, Aaron Reynolds got sick and lost his voice. We had to cancel our visit with him and we are in the process of rescheduling. If you purchased a book, Mrs. C will be in touch with you. Books will be sent home for our students to enjoy, and when the visit is rescheduled, students may bring in the books to be signed by Mr. Reynolds.
We have made a change in our reading program for our kindergarten, first, and second grade students! Students will receive a reading challenge paper at the beginning of each month.
For each reading activity they do, please have them color in a square or help them write the name of the book. When the challenges are complete, please send the calendar back to school. Your child will earn a reading paw and be entered in a drawing for a free book!
Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will continue to enter books and minutes in Biblionasium. We do have a special challenge during November! We want to encourage our students to find time to read OUTSIDE of school, so the media center is sponsoring a POP UP reading challenge! Now through November 17, send a picture of your child reading to Mrs. C.
They can be reading in the car, on the couch, outside -anywhere outside of school!
When Mrs. C gets the picture, your child will be entered in our special POP UP challenge drawing for a special prize. Email pictures to: traci.costilow@gcpsk12.org

PTA Announcements and Upcoming Events
Fundraiser: We did it Burnette! Thanks to generous donations from our friends and families, we met our goal and raised approximately $38,000 (before paying for campaign costs) for school improvements. The kids worked hard and had a great time on October 5th during our Burnette Pride Run. We are excited to announce that we have ordered the new picnic tables to create outdoor seating for our kids and already purchased some planter for our entrances to make our school warm & welcoming. Thank you again for your continued support.
All Pro Dads: Please join us for All Pro Dad’s breakfast on the first Friday of every month at 7:30 am in the Burnette Cafeteria. To assist the cafeteria in determining what is needed, please RSVP and register (registration & participation in APD is free) at https://allprodadchapters.com/chapters/3920. Breakfast is provided free for students only and can be purchased at $2.50 per adult from our cafeteria (prepay on MPP by 3pm on the Thursday before or pay cash at the door). Please park at the back of the school (lower level). For questions or more information, contact our All Pro Dad's team captain, Chris Hakkenberg, at chakkenberg@gmail.com (please put Burnette APD in the subject line.)
Memberships: Don’t forget to buy your PTA memberships ($8 per member) on My Payments Plus. Your membership dues help the PTA fund events for students and our staff. Volunteering is optional but highly encouraged as our kids love seeing us involved at school.
Yearbooks: With so many wonderful things happening at Burnette, you won’t want to miss out on our yearbook to remember that captures it all. The yearbooks are available for purchase on My Payments Plus for $27. The yearbook is not complete without pictures of your kiddos participating in all the fun, so don’t forget to send us pictures at burnetteptayearbook@gmail.com
Fun Friday: This Friday is pajama day. Bring a dollar and wear your pajamas! And heads up, December 3rd is Hat Day. Join the fun! Have your little ones bring a dollar and come to school with their favorite hat.
