School in the Spotlight
Garrison Mill Elementary
Congressional Hearing @ Garrison Mill
Becky DeLass, 5th grade teacher at Garrison Mill Elementary, held a Mock Congressional Hearing starring her students. Using the text, We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution, groups of students presented their “cases”, answering one of the unit questions from the text. A group of 3 “judges” asked follow-up questions, which were answered with ease.
Ms. DeLass’s students were passionate and highly engaged in their roles, presenting their cases with strong opinions supported by evidence from the text. It’s clear this group of children has a deep understanding of the Constitution, its amendments, and the Bill of Rights. Due to the power of this text and DeLass’s powerful teaching, these learners are now empowered to take their next steps as citizens promoting the common good.
