In the Classroom... 2/16/2018
As you can see, most of our week was tied up with the election. We focused on positive character traits, persuasive writings, and being good citizens. This was a great hands on lesson for the kids to apply what they've learned so far this year. Award's day is Friday the 23rd. I sent emails out to parents that have a child receiving an award on this day. The ceremony takes place at 1:20 in the Gym. The kids will be wearing their class shirts on Friday so be sure to send them in a comfortable shirt that they can wear underneath it.
Also this week, we learned a little bit about Abraham Lincoln and we toured his home in Springfield, Illinois through Skype in the Classroom. This helped build the kids background knowledge so they will be ready to learn more as we celebrate President's Day. On Thursday this week we will be heading to Tennessee to visit the Lincoln Museum via Skype in the Classroom.
In Math we reviewed time to the hour and half hour. Next week we will be switching gears and focusing on geometry.
Did you know your child is a geologist? That's right! This week they learned how to identify properties of rocks. They got to look at many different rocks that I had brought back from the North Carolina mountains. See if they can share some of the properties that they observed.
For Valentines we participated in a Team Building activity called Break Out Box... The kids were given clues to unlock the box and had to work in their Table Teams to figure the clues and break into the box. They had some awesome teamwork! You can watch our video below the NOTES section as well. It was lots of fun!
As you can see it was a BUSY week! There's a lot of things coming up in the next few weeks. Please be sure to read the Notes section so you don't miss out on this important info.
Have a great night!

Notes~
- Award's Day- Check your email to see if you received an email on Friday. I emailed parents of students who will be receiving an award this day (Fri. Feb. 23). Also, all the kids should wear a comfy shirt on Friday that will fit underneath their class shirt. We will be wearing these to represent our class at the Awards Rally.
- Dr. Seuss Day- We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday on Mar. 2nd with Mrs. Brown's and Mrs. Williams' class. We ask that the kids come dressed as his/her favorite Dr. Seuss character and bring in any Dr. Seuss books they have to share. We have many fun things planned for this celebration and we will be dressed up too! It will be loads of fun!
- 120 Day Projects Due- These are due on Mon, Mar. 5. I hope that your child has been busy putting together an awesome project. They always turn out great and I can't wait to see them and hear the kids share them.
- 120 Day- We are going to have a BIG 120 Day celebration with the other first grade classes. Make sure your child comes dressed to school as a very, very old man or woman! Our celebration is on Mar. 9th! I will be sending a sign-up genius later for our 120 Day snack.
- St. Patrick's Day- You never know when a little Leprechaun will pay a visit and cause all kinds of mayhem. Let's celebrate this day (Mar. 16) with LOTS of green; maybe even some little leprechauns. I will be dressed up for some fun; hope the kids will join in too!
- Field Trip Forms- These went home in Homework Folders last week. Please try to get these completed and sent in as soon as possible. We have to put the lunch orders in 3 weeks in advance and collect the money to pay the museum for our trip.
