Tumuaki Kōrero
Kia ora e te whānau,
I am delighted to let you know that our start to 2022 has been a smooth transition for our learners from Year 7 to 8 and from primary to intermediate school. It has been fantastic to see tuakana teina* happening between our Year 7 and 8 learners both inside and outside the classroom.
Team spirit is already being developed with a lunchtime team touch rugby tournament underway this week. Learners have been playing and supporting each other from the sidelines with gusto!
Learners have also been busy this week completing Progressive Achievement Tests (PATs), which are a useful assessment tool for teachers. The results give us a good indication of where our learners are at in the learning as well as areas for development. As a nationally standardised and moderated test, we are able to see where our learners sit across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Further information about our EOTC activities will be sent to you by your child’s classroom teacher by the end of this week along with a form for you to fill out. If you are available and able to volunteer your time during these activities, please indicate on the form as soon as possible. These events rely on parent volunteers to go ahead.
Please read the reminders section of the newsletter as there is some important information for you and your tamariki.
Finally, you will have seen on our app alert last evening that we had our first positive case of Covid19 in our school on Monday morning. The child was only in their classroom for a brief period at the start of the school day, We have erred on the side of caution at this stage and the learners in the class at that time are considered close contacts. No one else in the school is affected at this time. Both the class teacher and learners are currently at home in isolation. Information about the Ministry of Education guidelines and steps that we are following in response to Covid positive cases in our school will be sent out via our School App later today.
*Tuakana/teina refers to the relationship between an older (tuakana) person and a younger (teina) person and is specific to teaching and learning in the Māori context. ... Younger to older – the teina has some skills in an area that the tuakana does not and is able to teach the tuakana.
Ngā mihi,
Kate Surgison

SCHOOL NEWS AND INFORMATION
Emergency Evacuation and Lockdown Practices
We are planning to have an emergency evacuation practice next week to ensure that everyone is familiar with the procedures for safely evacuating our buildings. We are required by the Fire Service to undertake these practices twice a year.
Last week, as you will have been aware from our app alerts, we were in a short lockdown due to a person refusing to leave our school grounds. This was a good test of our systems and processes during this short event and everyone responded calmly. We will have another Lockdown practice later in the year and will inform you when this is taking place.

Bicycles
We have a large number of cyclists riding to and from school each day. We strongly recommend that all cyclists wear a fluoro vest so that they are highly visible. The traffic around our school is extremely busy at the start and end of the school day.
Please check that your child has a sturdy lock for their bike so that it is safe during the day.
