Welcome Back to School 2022 - 2023
Dear Montgomery Blair High School Families,
Welcome to the 2022 - 2023 school year! I hope you have had the opportunity to spend time with family and friends this summer. As you know, I had total knee replacement surgery in late June, but I am well-rested, recharged, and ready to welcome our staff and students back to school. I want to THANK my administrative team and staff who worked this summer to get our large building ready for your return to school.
Our top priorities this school year, which aligns with Superintendent McKnight's vision, are to continue to rebuild our relationships with students, staff, and families; support our students' health and social-emotional well-being; and refocus on equitable teaching and learning.
Over the summer, we have added several enhancements to our school building to address our growing student and staff population. This summer, we received an additional outside portable, which brings us to 19 portables; ten on the University Boulevard side and nine on the Colesville Road side of the building. We are still enrolling new students. I am excited to share that MCPS has put wellness centers in every high school. At Blair, our wellness center is in room 122, and it will support students' well-being and engage them in positive social activities. The Wellness Center is staffed by YMCA Youth and Family Services.
In addition to the wellness center, MCPS has assigned a social worker to every high school. Ms. Emily Callaghan, our social worker and proud Blair Alumna, is joining the Blair team as additional support and resource for our students.
Our TV studio has been renovated this summer, and the editing rooms have been removed to have an additional TV Studio classroom. Our track field will be upgraded to a regulation soccer field with stadium lights and will be completed by next spring by the Montgomery County Department of Parks.
Although not required, all MCPS staff, students, and visitors are encouraged to wear face masks in our school building. The health and well-being of our students and staff are my top priorities. Like last year, we will have masks for anyone who wants one. MCPS will provide free COVID test kits to staff and students too. My administrative team and I will review our health and safety precautions with you throughout the school year.
Our theme this year is United We Soar! After the past few challenging years with the pandemic and transitioning to in-person learning, we believe there is strength in unity. We are partnering with families and staff to ensure the success of our students. Our ninth grade and new student orientation is Thursday, August 25, 2022. We are also thrilled to announce that our Back to School Night is in-person and is scheduled for Thursday, September 22, 2022.
As I work with our staff to organize a smooth school opening, I always welcome new ideas and strategies to ensure that all students graduate with the skills to navigate their chosen path successfully. I know that United We Will Soar and take Montgomery Blair High School to new heights, where our students will thrive!
Finally, I am very excited to begin my 12th year as your principal! We have the largest high school enrollment in Maryland, with over 3,200 students and 320 staff members. At Montgomery Blair High School, we celebrate the diversity of students and embrace cultural and ethnic differences. Our Blazers have been recognized nationally and remain at the forefront of equity and excellence.

Ninth Grade and New Student Orientation/ Parent Meeting
9th Grade and New Student Orientation:
Montgomery Blair High School will host an orientation for 9th-grade students and students who are new to Blair on Thursday, August 25, 2022. Students will have an opportunity to meet the principal, and their administrators, follow their class schedules, walk around the building, and meet their teachers. There will be bus transportation both ways for the 9th-grade and new student orientation.
Please note that this orientation is only for students – not parents. There will be a 9th-grade parent meeting on Thursday, September 8. 9th Grade Parent Meeting:
There will be a 9th-grade parent meeting on Thursday, September 8, 2022, in the Montgomery Blair High School Auditorium. Parents will be able to meet the 9th-grade administrators, the 9th-grade team leaders, and school counselors. There will be presentations about school grading policy, attendance, athletics, and extracurricular activities. There will also be time for questions. Please look for more details about the 9th-grade parent meeting on the Blair website (www.mbhs.edu) on or before September 1. Students' schedules will be available on Monday, August 22, 2022, through StudentVUE and ParentVUE (https://md-mcps-psv.edupoint.com/PXP2_Login.aspx). You may need to set the term to S1 for 2022-23 or the date to August 30 (the first day of the term) in order to see the schedule. Please note that counseling is still working to correct any conflicts, so schedules may change between now and the start of school.
On the first day of school, students will report to their homeroom class to begin the day. We encourage students to look up their schedules before leaving for school so they know where to go. We will have plenty of staff available to assist students as needed and to get to call on time. School begins promptly at 7:45 a.m.
Bus Schedules: Please note that bus schedules often change slightly during the first few weeks of school; any changes to the bus schedules will be posted as we receive them.

Montgomery Blair High School will have a variety of emergency drills throughout the school year. We will have several different Emergency drills during the first week of classes (Monday August 29 – Friday September 2). These Emergency drills include a Fire Evacuation Drill, a Shelter In Place Drill, a Lockdown drill, and a Severe Weather Drill. Blair and MCPS want students and staff to be as prepared as possible in the event of an emergency situation. School Lockers Are Available By Request
Montgomery Blair High School students can carry their backpacks, book bags, etc. with them during the school day. While using a hallway locker is optional, students can request one using this form: https://bit.ly/MBHS_locker. Students enrolled in a Physical Education class will automatically be assigned a PE locker.
9th-grade students and all students who are new to Blair will be assigned Chromebooks during the first week of school. They will receive their Chromebooks at the same time that they have their student ID pictures taken (between Tuesday, August 30 – Friday, September 2). Since all 9th grade students and students new to Blair will be receiving their Chromebooks between August 30 – September 2. Students or parents who have questions about this can contact Assistant Principal Joe Fanning via email at Joseph_M_Fanning@mcpsmd.org.
Parking applications for the Fall Semester will be available beginning Monday, August 22. Parking permits are $37.50 for the semester, and limited spaces are available on a first-come, first serve basis. Students must provide with their application a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration, and current vehicle insurance policy, and have no outstanding financial obligation.
Parking Permit Application forms will be available on the mbhs.edu website and at the Attendance Office beginning Monday, August 22. New this year students will pay online for student parking. New Online Payment System Available for School-Related Fees
SchoolCash Online helps parents and guardians pay school-related fees — such as field trip costs — safely, quickly and easily. This service will increase efficiency and security by making payments directly into schools’ bank accounts and eliminating the need for teachers to handle money. The new system puts all school-related fees online so payments can be made using a credit card or e-check. Cash and check payments directly to schools are still an option. How to Register
Students must be registered by a parent through the MCPS ParentVue Portal. More information regarding the registration process can be found in this letter from MCPS (también disponible en español). Students should be registered by August 8 in order to guarantee that their registration will be processed in time for the first day of tryouts.
Steps for Registering via ParentVue (DIRECTIONS AVAILABLE HERE).
- Login to MCPS ParentVue Portal
- Locate “Online Registration” in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
- You should then see prompts to enter information for the “2022-2023 HS Athletics Registration – Fall”.
If you see something for “Annual Verification” or “Resume Annual Registration”, please click the “Start Over” button, log out and log back in, this should then allow you to access the Athletic Registration.
- The Athletics Registration screens will have you verify information in the system and then allow you to review and complete the Athletics Registration forms.
If any of the information appearing on the “Family” or “Parent/Guardian” information screens is incorrect, please contact Rosa Ponce, School Registrar, to have this corrected before completing your registration.
ParentVue Troubleshooting Information
If a parent is having trouble logging into the MCPS ParentVue Portal:

- If you have never activated your parent account:
Parents were sent activation information at the beginning of the school year, which included an Activation Key. If you still have this information, use it to activate your parent account. If you do not have the activation information, email Blair Athletic Specialist, Rita J. Boulé. Be sure to include the student name, ID, and parent name in the email.
- Forgot your password? Click on the Forgot Password link on the ParentVue Portal. You can also email Brandon Crabtree in the Blair main office. Be sure to include the student name, ID, and parent name in the email
- Forgot the email address you used to activate your account? Email Blair Athletic Specialist, Rita J. Boulé. Be sure to include the student name, ID, and parent name in the email.
Students should complete their pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) so that the medical eligibility form (last two pages of SR-8) is ready for online submission or for submission to the coach prior to tryouts/practices. Physicals are valid for one calendar year. A partial list of Clinics that offer Sports Physicals within the Montgomery County area is available online.
Physicals can be uploaded by the parent during the registration process. However, if a parent needs to submit a physical after the student has already been registered, email an electronic copy of the completed pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) to Blair Athletic Specialist, Rita J. Boulé.

MCPS uses ParentVUE to assist parents with school communications, including information on school emails, parent-teacher communication, report cards, and athletic registration. It's important to have an account for each child enrolled at Blair. Ms. Melissa Young, Latino Achievement Coordinator, and Ms. Andrea Lamphier, Media Specialist, can help parents locate and update accounts, including sending a ParentVUE activation letter if your child was enrolled at Blair last year.

Even though ParentVUE works with myMCPS Classroom (Canvas), you will want to make sure to remove your old Parent Portal app. Here are the directions for ParentVUE. If possible, use the same email as before.
MCPS Online Digital Tools Permission Required
MCPS takes seriously its responsibility of safeguarding student data privacy, and each year, requests parental permission for student use of instructional Online Digital Tools. MCPS provides many approved tools for classroom use by all grade levels and requires Affirmative Parental Consent for other tools. Please see this MCPS page on Data Privacy and Security for additional information.

Cafeteria News: School Meals
MCPS will resume regular meal services during the 2022–2023 school year.

Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications
Apply online NOW so that benefits will be in place when school starts! Families who meet certain federal income standards are eligible for free or reduced-price meal benefits. All children use their MCPS ID number at the register so confidentiality is maintained and no child is overtly identified as receiving free or reduced-price meals. Only one application is needed for all students in a household.
A new application must be completed for any family requesting assistance this school year. The online application is now open for families to submit applications.

The PSAT provides an important measure of each student’s readiness for advanced coursework, college and careers, and preparation for future college readiness examinations. The PSAT is administered to all Grade 10 students in October. The PSAT will be offered to all Grade 10 students on October 12, 2022, at no cost. However, current Grade 11 students must pay the $19 fee for the assessment, they are encouraged to participate to obtain additional SAT practice and participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program. All 11th grade students interested in taking the PSAT must register PSAT Registration. More information on online payment is forthcoming.
The SAT (without Essay) is offered to all Grade 11 students during the school day in March of each year. The SAT School Day will be offered to all Grade 11 students (or other eligible students in the same graduation cohort), districtwide on March 22, 2023. Please note that students taking the SAT during a school day must adhere to the same testing protocols that take place on national testing dates. Additional information will be provided at a later date.

Meet Faye Nabavian, Parent Community Coordinator
My name is Farzaneh (Faye) Nabavian and I am the Parent Community Coordinator at Blair High School. I assist to build and strengthen positive relationships with families and I work collaboratively with school leaders, staff, and community organizations to develop and implement family engagement activities.
I support families by guiding them through the school system, helping to build their ability to advocate for their student’s academic success, especially those who may be facing language, cultural or economic barriers.
I also have established the “Kindness Corner” at Blair with the support of Ms. Johnson, and this year is the 4th year of Kindness Corner. It has been possible with the great support of the school community and the Blair PTSA and every department that generously supports and donates to keep it running. All Period Days
Based on staff input, Blair will be increasing the number of all-period days to explore how this may improve academic opportunities and support for students. We feel that in 5-day weeks, the adjustment of one day to an all-period day will even out the amount of time a student spends in each class per week and minimize the gaps between classes if school is disrupted due to weather closings. Additionally, through strategic use of the all-period day, teacher’s will have the ability to more equitably serve their students, check for understanding and provide academic support in a more timely fashion. Student attendance is still required on all-period days as key learning will still take place.
For the 2022-23 school year, the following days have been identified as all-period days:

We will be seeking student and parent feedback as we try this schedule enhancement during the year. If the trial is successful, we will expand the use of all-period days in 2023-24.

MCPS is looking for student volunteers (8th -12th grade) to support the 2022 Back to School Fair by helping to set up tables, escort vendors to their tables, support the resource fair, and break down the event from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 27. Interested students may find additional details and the link to sign up to volunteer here.
We are seeking students interested in developing a video presentation with either a leadership moment or extracurricular skills to inspire, teach, and share with their MCPS peers and the greater MCPS community. Students may earn 10 SSL hours for successful submission of all items identified in the Student-To-Student Extracurricular Series Form. Learn more.
