5 Tips to Encourage Reading
There's something about seeing children picking up a book or magazine and reading it of their own free will. Below are some ways my husband Taylor and I encouraged our own children to read when they were young. As adults, both Jordan and Leanna are avid readers and strong writers today.
- We didn't always agree with their choices, but for the most part we let our children choose their own reading materials. If we questioned their picks, we compromised by narrowing down and choosing from several agreed-upon selections.
- We subscribed to hard copies of magazines that interested them. Those which arrived at the house under their names proved especially popular all year long.
- On occasional leisurely mornings at the breakfast table, we often read the newspaper together. With each of us in the family taking a section, we paused after so many minutes and shared what we read with each other and took time to comment on the topics. This habit led to some interesting and sometimes intense conversations.
- Our family frequented libraries, bookstores, museums, book fairs and flea markets. The key to successful outings was allowing enough time to explore what captured our individual attentions, sharing what we discovered and then moving on to the next section to keep the visit high-interest.
- We encouraged journal writing by keeping journals ourselves. Since our summers were packed with activities, family outings, get-togethers with friends and family and traveling locally and beyond, it was easy to come up with writing topics.
Every child deserves an edge! Make reading and writing part of your life, and the children will follow your lead.
