5th Grade News
Week of September 7th
All Things EQ Weekly Motto
I'm kind to the people I am with right now.
ELA
This week the essential question we will be looking at is, "How does genre affect the way a story is told?" We will be looking at different ways authors can tell stories. We will continue looking at text and graphic features in stories and how they help the reader. Students will use Synthesizing techniques to understand stories. Literary elements will be reviewed pertaining to setting, characters, and plot.

Math
I can't believe we are already half way through quarter 1! I cannot say enough times how impressed I am with everyones hard work and flexibility as we continue to learn math (and Canvas) online. This week is the last week of module 1. We will be reviewing all concepts in module 1 and have an end of the module test on Thursday. This test will include rounding decimals, comparing decimals, and all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with decimals. Grades have been updated so please review PowerSchools with your child if there are any missing quizzes or quizzes that you would like to retake for a better grade. As always, please reach out if you have any additional questions or concerns!

Science
Students should have submitted their completed Moon Calendar that they have been working on since the first week of school. This week in science we continue our research on planets in class Tuesday and Wednesday. They will be due on Wednesday. Students need to complete the Google Slide Presentation by writing a paragraph using their research about the characteristics, exploration & facts and if humans can survive on their chosen planet. The project is worth 20 points and there is rubric attached to the assignment. We will then review the concepts we learned about the moon and take a quiz. At the end of the week we will have a unit assessment on everything we have learned about the Sun, the Earth and Moon and the Solar System.

Social Studies
Students are continuing to work on their research of a historical figure from the Revolutionary War period. They will need to do a presentation on Canvas Studio and post it in a discussion board. Students will need to post and comment on each other's presentations. This is something we will work on in class.

Online Learning
We are moving in to week 6 and hopefully students have gotten their schedule down. Please make sure that they know how important it is to show up to the Zoom classes on time. With 30 minutes of instruction we start right away and students that are late are missing some of the instruction and it's hard to get them caught up. We are especially having problems with students showing up late after lunch.
This week will be our second week of RTI (Response to Intervention) time. Each student was assigned to an intervention group to support their current academic level. This is additional instructional time so students need to go to their assigned teacher for RTI between 10:30 and 11:15.
Small groups are also in full swing. Students were assigned to a specific day and time to meet with each of their teachers in a small group setting. This allows us to support students and answer questions and provide additional instruction if necessary. It is important that students show up on their assigned day at their assigned time. Students are not assigned to more that one small group a day so they still have ample asynchronous time in the afternoon to complete assignments.

Grades and PowerSchool
Our DVUSD grading policy is that a minimum of one grade should be entered per subject per
week. We understand there may have been some confusion from those earlier weeks about
what was essential. Your child’s teacher will communicate with you about what assignments are
essential skill sets that need to be addressed and finished, not just for grading but to measure
understanding of concepts that are urgent as they build and are needed to move forward.
Once those key essential assignments have been noted, your child has time to complete them
before the quarter ends without penalty. However, if your child does not complete those
assignments, they may be either marked as missing or given the 50% grade for that missing
assignment. As for the older students, they will be given the 50% now, but can improve their
grade if an assignment is turned in before the end of the quarter. This measure is taken as not to create a surprise or grade shock as we near the end of the quarter. Rather, its purpose is to
inform.
The official grade that will appear on your child's report card is the grade that is in PowerSchool, not in Canvas. I know there has been some confusion there. Students are able to log on to PowerSchool to see their grades. If you do not have a parent log in contact the school. We are now mid-way through the quarter so students should be checking their grades weekly.
