Welcome Back

We had a fantastic start to the school year. The three days of school this week showed the excitement of our students and staff for what promises to be a wonderful year. Teachers spent the week reviewing expectations, getting to know students, and providing activities in their classrooms to building relationships between students and teacher. Thank you to all the families for the hard work in preparing for the first few days. Your work in preparing your students was obvious and a big reason for a successful three days.

PBIS Common Area Expectations

On Friday morning 6th Graders learned our PBIS Common Area Expectations. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports. This is part of our Social-Emotional learning that teaches expected behavior throughout our building. Each year we review these expectations with our students. We'll revisit the expectations with 7th Grade on Monday and 8th Grade on Tuesday.

Below are pictures from our teachings in addition to a short video clip as we talked about celebrating our diversity and committing to accepting one another. Check out the video and talk to your child about the powerful message behind it.

Picture Day/Re-takes

We will communicate an arrival date of school pictures for those families that attended Back to School Night on Thursday, August 17. Students will have these distributed by their homeroom teacher.

For those families unable to attend Back to School Night or those families needing re-takes we will have HR Imaging back at Franklin on Tuesday, September 12. See the instructions below:

  • NO PICTURE TAKEN: Your child can pick up a packet in the main office. Click on the link for online order information:
  • RE-TAKE: Students will need to bring their picture packets back to school on the day of re-takes.

2017-18 Building Schedules

There is an error on the page in the Franklin Handbook & Calendar that lists the building schedule. Please disregard that page and use the following. You can click on the picture or follow the link to the document on our website.

Important Need to Knows

What are A/B Fridays?

On Fridays, students’ Exploratories (PE, Vocal, Band, Orchestra) alternate every week. This is to ensure that all classes meet equally. Classes that meet on Monday & Wednesday are considered their “A” class and Tuesday & Thursday are “B”.

When do students hear school announcements?

We have announcements at the beginning and end of the day. Announcements often include events for the day/week, recaps from activities, birthdays, and other important school-related information. Many of these same items are shown on our video screens around the building. We ask our students to be proactive when making arrangements to come in before or after school.

How can I get messages to my child?

Parents are allowed to leave messages for students. This can be done by contacting the Main Office or Attendance Office. With that said, we try to limit the amount of disruptions during the school day. All calls over the intercom are only made during morning and afternoon announcements. We would appreciate as much advanced notice as possible. It often proves challenging getting a message to a student immediately or when a parent is out front and calls for their child to be dismissed. We would appreciate as much notice as possible.

Hy-Vee Receipt Winners

We want to thank all the families that brought in receipts during Back to School Night. We're already off to a great start with the amount of receipts dropped off. Thank you, thank you, thank you. A reminder for families that any Cedar Rapids/Marion Hy-Vee Grocery, Gas, Drug store can be submitted to Franklin. We receive a portion of the total money in receipts at the end of the year.

Look at the above names of receipts drawn. The following students received a token of appreciation here at school. We also are awarding a reserved parking space for each family for an upcoming fall concert. Stay tuned.

Fall Sports

Sports' practices are either underway or will begin next week. Boys' tennis and 8th Grade football began this week while the other sports will begin next week. It's not too late for your child to join. We encourage you to reach out to the coaches below if your 7th or 8th Grader is interested in participating.

Below are the sports and coaches for the first season:

  • Cross Country (Josh Hetrick)
  • Football (7th: Eric Suthers / 8th: Kyle Clark)
  • Girls' Soccer (Brian Jeffords)
  • Boys' Tennis (Joe Benedict)
  • Volleyball (7th: Melissa Williams 8th: Jessica Carter)

Kingston Stadium MS Seating

We know many of our students enjoy going to Kingston Stadium on Thursday and Friday to support our area high schools. For middle schools attending there will be an assigned section. This will be in the north end of the stadium. There will be signs directing students to this section. Students that attend with their families also have the option to sit with their parents.

Where to Drop Off & Pick Up?

For the safety of our students and staff we encourage you to carefully read through the map below. The cooperation and patience of all our families is essential as we orchestrate the hustle and bustle of the morning and afternoon.

We encourage families to plan ahead for a designated drop off and pick up location. The front of the building (20th Street) is a very busy street before and after school. There are better alternatives for families that are less congested. We encourage you to consult your summer mailings with a flyer for locations. You can also see the picture below.
