PTA NEWS FLASH
Indian Knoll Elementary
Letter from the Principal
Dear IKES Families,
As we move into February, we are able to assess our students’ mid-year academic gains and work towards our year-long goals. Our students are focused on iReady math gains as well as improvements in their reading levels that are reflected in our School Improvement goals. The faculty and staff have been working on student accountability and letting our Firebirds be part of the learning process. Students are setting goals, tracking their progress and are very aware of the expectations. It is exciting to see that lightbulb go off when a child is working to master a concept!
In February we are looking forward to a variety of events to include another PTA meeting with a 1st grade performance and an All Pro Dad’s meeting. We also have several food events scheduled. We are hosting Marco’s Spirit Night, Culver’s Spirit Night, Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night, and delivering Valentine’s Grams. There are plenty of ways that you can be involved in our school offerings and many fun events to choose from.
I hope that you all can take advantage of our February Break time that is coming up (Feb. 17-21). Whether it is a local day trip, a longer excursion or a chance to get away to the beach or a theme park, it is important to allow your children the time to relax and enjoy simply being a child.
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly if you have any questions, comments or concerns. The administrative team takes pride in being available to all of our stakeholders.
Mrs. Colleen DeLosh – Grades 3-5
Mrs. Lori Waycaster – Grades K-2
For the month of February, we will continue to focus on character education in grades K- 5 during scheduled guidance times.
We are interested in creating a counselor committee for the 2020-2021 school year. The committee would work cooperatively with the counselors to help with the food pantry, basic student needs, and reaching out to community resources. If you are interested in serving on the committee, please contact one of us.
If you would like to donate to our food pantry, please leave items in the front office marked ‘Counselors’.
We are also in need of new shoes in various sizes and genders. Please turn in donations to the front office to the counselor’s attention.
If you or anyone you know is in need of resources, including food or clothing, please feel free to use this link https://www.cherokeek12.net/Content2/resources or contact either one of us at: email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Spotlight on Kindness - Aiden Tsuhlares
To be a leader, you must learn to stand out from the crowd. This is sometimes more difficult than it seems since following is naturally the easier path. Aiden Tsuhlares of Mrs. Leming's 5th grade class demonstrated incredible leadership and wonderful character when he befriended a student who was upset by an exchange with another student. While most people would have turned away from the situation, Aiden took the unprompted opportunity to help the student to feel better. He was not asked to, nor did he have to and yet, he felt compelled to help and fix the situation. As parents, I think we all want our children to have a friend like Aiden. Thank you, Aiden for taking initiative to demonstrate the huge impact of the simplicity of kindness.
Help us spread some love by sharing wonderful acts of kindness that you do or experience! Let's celebrate compassion together and inspire each other to pay it forward! Please send pictures or stories of your acts of kindness to email@example.com.

Spirit Rock Reservations and Painting!!
Another school year brings about opportunity for celebratory shout-outs! Our spirit rock shout-outs were outstanding last year, offering the opportunity for us to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and accomplishments! We can't wait to see all of the creativity on our spirit rock this year! See below for all of the details.
Spirit Rock Sign-up:
In an effort to make spirit rock sign up as smooth a process as possible, we have changed the process slightly this year. Sign-up dates for your special event are listed below:
- August to October dates: released July 26th @ 7pm
- November to February dates: released October 10th @7pm
- March to May dates: released February 10th @ 7pm
**Payment will be required at the time of sign up in order to complete your reservation.
Spirit Rock Painting:
We have had several parents and/ or family members inquire about hiring someone to paint the spirit rock for their special event. We want to make this a little easier by listing some of those individuals who offer these services on the Spirit Rock FAQ tab on the IKES PTA website, including: Tay's Paints and Painted Pebbles. We have confirmed that Art by Amanda is no longer offering painting services, but Petit Artist in Woodstock will now offer these services. We will be updating the website shortly with this new information. Please click on the Spirit Rock FAQ tab here to find links to their Facebook pages.
**Please remember that these services are not affiliated with IKES PTA and will require a separate, additional payment to the artist. Before you book any paint services, please be sure you have reserved and paid your rock reservation with IKES PTA.
If you have any questions regarding spirit rock, please contact Jackie at firstname.lastname@example.org.
