Students in Current Middle East Conflicts class had an in-depth discussion with Khalid Rahman Abbud. He is a refugee from Iraq who is currently living in Spain. He was originally from Iraq; however, he spent 27 years of his life living in Iran. This is because his family was Shia and subjugated under Saddam Husseinβs rule. His father attended a protest and was arrested and tortured for six months for doing so. After his release the family was afraid for their safety and so they chose to flee to Iran. They lived there for 27 years but were never able to gain citizenship because citizenship is unattainable in Iran unless you are born there. Further, when Saddam Hussein was ousted from power Iran decided that the family was safe to return home. When they returned home Khalid did not feel safe because he decided that he was an atheist. He was threatened in his own home at 4 oβclock in the morning. He realized that being an atheist was too risky in Iraq due to the many different Shia militia that became powerful there, especially while and after fighting ISIS. Thus, he fled to Spain and is currently seeking asylum there. However, Spain is arguing that he can go home and simply pretend to be a Muslim. His argument is that if he were a Christian the Spanish would keep him there for his safety. He sees it as unfair that he should have to go home and pretend to be something that he is not when Christians from Iraq are granted asylum in Spain. He is currently fighting for his right to remain in Spain. The students had many intriguing questions for him about Iraq, Iran and Islam; the conversation was extremely high level.
