MR. ASHLEY AND MRS. HAYES SPEAK AT CONFERENCE
Parke Heritage High School Principal Mr. Dwight Ashley and Ivy Tech Interim Director of K-12 Transitions Mrs. Laura Hayes were guest speakers at the H. Kent Weldon Conference for Higher Education held Tuesday, April 9 in Indianapolis.
The focus of the Conference was “Supporting the Transition from High School to College and Careers”. The H. Kent Weldon Conference for Higher Education is an annual convening of Indiana students, educators, business, community and government leaders to share and discuss ideas that impact higher education and workforce development within the State.
Mr. Ashley and Mrs. Hayes presented information on how Parke Heritage teachers work with Ivy Tech to allow students to graduate with a high school diploma and post-secondary credential. For the 2019 graduating class, 40% of the seniors will graduate with these post-secondary credentials.
"We are proud of the K-14 college and career culture we have created at Parke Heritage,” said Mr. Ashley. “With the efforts of many great teachers and staff, as well as the incredible partnership of Ivy Tech and Laura Hayes, we have fully integrated our school to helping our students and families connect all the dots and create a customized plan for success."
One of the main focuses of their presentation was to provide information about how Parke Heritage students have benefited from the post-secondary programs.
“Parke Heritage continues to be one of the leaders in the state with dual credits offered and post-secondary credentials earned by high school students,” said Mrs. Hayes. “Parke Heritage students are now able to earn two additional certificates from Ivy Tech. Certificates in Structural Welding and Information Technology Helpdesk are available to our students who complete two years in our career and technical education program.”
If you would like more information about the post-secondary credential program, please contact Mrs. Hayes at hayesl@ncp.k12.in.us or 765-569-4108.
SCALE MODEL PROJECT
Geometry students in Mrs. Jessica Jeffers high school class paired up and chose an object of which to create a scale model. The students had to pick five specific measurements of the original object, scale those measurements up or down depending on the scale factor they chose, and then build the scale model based on those measurements.
Some groups worked with more than five measurements to ensure a more realistic model. They were given five days in class to work on the project and had limited supplies. They were not allowed to work outside of the classroom on this project. Students had to communicate with their partner, make a plan, measure precisely, be creative, and use a lot of problem-solving in order to meet the deadline.
“Doing the scale model projects was fun. It was fun using our measuring skills to build our models,” said Aaron Anderson.
Afterwards, the teachers and staff at the high school voted on their favorites from each geometry class. Most of the scale models are currently on display at the high school in the 100 hallway and 200 hallway display cases.
“My partner, Oakley Smith and I made the American Flag for our scale model,” said Brecken Lewis. “I enjoyed doing this project very much and learned that partnership and leadership play key roles in doing a project like this. Getting the measurements right was pretty tricky but once we got the hang of it the project was a blast!”
CONSERVATION DAY
Students learned about various conservation, forestry, wildlife and nature topics. This event is a way to expose the students to the topics outside of the classroom and provide hands-on activities for them.
Members of the Parke Heritage Middle School and High School FFA helped with the different stations.

The Orchestra played a variety of music ranging from "Star Wars" movie theme, "Jaws" movie theme and even "Baby Shark". The program also introduces the students to the various instruments in hopes that they too will want to become musicians.
