reminder about absences

Students are expected to be in class and to make attendance a top priority. Learning lost due to an absence can never be replaced. Regular attendance and being well prepared for class helps students in school as well as prepares students for adulthood. School attendance is the responsibility of the student and his/her parent/guardian and the school. The school expects that a student will be in school every day and that planning ahead and keeping school attendance as a high priority can minimize most absences. All absences are to be reported to the appropriate attendance secretary. Elementary Office: 563-659-0750. The school determines whether an absence is excused or unexcused. Excused absences include, but are not limited to, illness, medical or dental appointments not able to be scheduled during out-of-school times, family emergency, death or funeral in family, recognized religious observances and school activities. Unexcused absences include, but are not limited to: tardiness, shopping, hunting, hair appointments, missing the bus, oversleeping, concerts, preparation or participation in parties, family pictures or other celebrations. All contested absences will be left to the discretion of the building administrator.

Ekstrand Book Fair

The Book Fair is Oct. 15-18, during the day and conference times. When you buy from the book fair, we then purchase new books for our library. Thanks for your support!

saber senate

Our Student Leadership Teacher Committee will be working with the students on Saber Senate this week to organize a donation drive to collect various items for the DeWitt Referral Center. Please look for additional information regarding this drive coming home this week.

Halloween Parade Update

This year Halloween falls on an early out for our District. This year we will be holding our Halloween Parade around the horseshoe drive at 10:20 a.m. Teachers will be communicating out the times in which they will be scheduling their classroom parties.

Ekstrand Parent-Teacher Conferences

A week ago a school messenger was sent out via e-mail for parents to sign-up for a time slot for parent-teacher conferences. We will be using the website Sign-Up Genius for parents to secure a time slot to meet with their child's teacher during our two days of parent-teacher conferences on Wednesday October 17th and Thursday October 18th. If you have yet to sign-up for a time slot please do so by clicking on the link below. The video tutorial link is about four minutes long and walks you through the process.

Guidance

Guidance:

The school year is in full swing with an entire month under our belts already. As the school counselor, I (Mrs. Johnson) spend 30 minutes in each classroom every six days. It has been wonderful starting the year teaching all students our Listening Rules - Eyes watching, Ears listening, Body still, and Voice quiet. Knowing these rules helps students understand our expectations here at Ekstrand; especially in the classroom. Moving forward, we are starting our lessons using some imagery and deep breathing to find peace and calmness with our mind and body. It has been very rewarding listening to the students feedback of how using imagery during guidance has helped them to relax and feel happy. We are looking forward to continuing this throughout the year.

Watch DOGS

In September we had our Watch DOG Pizza Party to kick off the year! We had a great turn out with approximately 140 dads and students in attendance. It was wonderful to meet so many new people and see so many returning faces! The students and teachers are looking forward to having you at the school to volunteer your help. If you are interested and were not able to attend the Pizza Party, please feel free to contact Molly Johnson (counselor) at molly.johnson@cd-csd.org or 563-659-4763 for more information. If you have already registered, please be sure to have your background check completed so that you are able to come in on your scheduled date. Thank you for all of your support!
