Reading News!

As the end of the 2nd quarter approaches this week, we are spending each day reviewing text features, text structures, author's purpose, and main idea. These concepts will be on an end of the quarter test that will be given on Thursday. This test is an important grade and I am reviewing all concepts to ensure success. Please review them at home as well. Thank you!

This week we continue to read Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen. Students are doing a great job and are reviewing many of the "Reading Literature" standards we did first quarter. My goal is for them to start using the strategies I've taught them for putting evidence from the text into their written responses. I've given them ways to start these sentences such as, "According to the text....", "Based on what I've read.....","On page......", "For instance.....", "For example......" and so on. Some students are getting proficient at quoting the text/author, which is VERY good. We will be working on this as we move forward.

Social Studies

This week ends our study of the Maya, Inca, and Aztec. Today we filled out a study guide that should be studied all week for a test on Friday. Your child took notes and knows what will be on the test. (I try to make it as clear as possible so there are no surprises!) I told them that IF they study their notes they should do great!! If they do not, they may have problems. So, please encourage your child to study this week! :)

Read-A-Thon Starts Tomorrow!!! "Read Under the Big Top!"

Your child should have his/her read-a-thon packet at home by now. There is also an envelope that came home to put the money in. We hope that your child can participate!! Happy Reading!!
