From the Trussville City Schools Board of Education

On behalf of the Trussville City Schools Board of Education, I would like to thank the Trussville community for your time and attendance at the Special Called Board Meeting of September 30, 2022.

We deeply and humbly apologize for all the emotional and mental distress experienced by our students, parents and staff. It is painful and we want to work towards healing, and that includes every single student.

The safety of our students and staff is our first priority. We not only want our students to be safe, we want them to feel safe. If a student does not feel safe, they cannot learn.

The Board of Education was deeply moved by your concerns. We will walk through the process together of increasing communication to faculty, staff, students, parents and our community, review of our special education program and a comprehensive assessment of our safety protocols. Thank you for your support and consideration as we address these issues moving forward.

At the Special Called Meeting, the Board of Education approved a 60 day leave of absence for Dr. Neill. The Board will meet within the next week to name an Interim Superintendent. Notification of the special called meeting will be sent once a date/time have been confirmed.

As our 1st Action Item, all Board of Education Members now have individual email addresses. They are listed below:

Board Member Steve Ward – steve.ward@trussvillecityschools.com

HT Student Leadership Class visits Trussville City Schools Central Office

Students from Mrs. Benson's Leadership HT Class visited TCS Central Office Thursday, September 29, 2022. Students heard from Dr. Neill, Assistant Superintendents Mr. Kirkland, Dr. Berry, and Dr. Poovey and Athletics Director Mr. Walker. Each shared their leadership style and strategies with the students. The students were dressed for success and asked interesting and thoughtful questions of the CO leadership team. These students are so bright and will be great leaders in our community. The students then toured the new central office building.

A huge thank you to The Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce and Jimmy John's for providing a wonderful lunch complete with cupcakes for the students.

Magnolia Elementary Participates in National Tackle Kids Cancer Day

Student Leadership Team members led by Mrs. Blake coordinated Magnolia's participation in National Tackle Kids Cancer Day, a day set aside to raise awareness of pediatric cancer. National Tackle Kids Cancer Day is especially meaningful for the Magnolia family who wanted to support and celebrate Wyatt Reeves, a Magnolia student and cancer survivor. The Student Leadership Team held a two-week-long contest to raise funds in support of pediatric cancer research. In this contest, the boys brought in $666.72, and the girls brought in $486.03, for a grand total of $1,152.75!

In the words of Magnolia Principal, Dr. Phyllis Faust, "We are extremely blessed to have Wyatt Reeves as part of our school family! Wyatt has had a lot to deal with at such a young age. Wyatt’s battle began in November 2021 when doctors discovered a large kidney tumor and a lung nodule, later diagnosed as a Wilm’s tumor stage IV. This feisty young man has been a trooper through this battle, and I am thrilled to say that 'Wyatt has whooped Wilm’s!' I am truly grateful for the generosity of our Magnolia family as we donate the $1,152.75 to Alabama Children's Hospital cancer research on behalf of Wyatt Reeves!"

A Huge Thank You From Cahaba Elementary School!

Cahaba Elementary would like to thank students, parents, grandparents, faculty/staff and everyone who attended their Family Night at the Book Fair. Thanks to everyone for making it a huge success!

Paine Pathfinders

Paine Elementary School 5th graders recently began serving as “Paine Pathfinders,” and things are already off to a great start! Paine has over 70 Pathfinders, divided among the three trimesters! The Paine Pathfinder Program provides 5th grade students with unique leadership opportunities at Paine, from assisting with carline, to serving as peer partners for younger students, to voting on school-wide initiatives. By definition, pathfinders are leaders! They are known to show others the path or way, and they exemplify excellence, success, and reliability. Paine is already so proud of these students and their hard work!

Current Need:

There are students in Trussville City Schools lacking funds for lunch this semester. Lunches have been free the last two years and families are adapting to paying for lunches again. Based on current charges, each school will need at least $1000 this semester to cover lunch charges for students who are struggling to pay at this time. Student lunches are $2.50 per day. We currently have over 450 students are charging lunches.

Thank you for sharing your kindness!
