Small Schools, Big Wins
From the Journal Standard . . .
"It doesn’t matter how many athletes you have if they’re the right ones.
That’s a theory Aquin has consistently proven for the better part of a decade. Despite having only 98 students this year, the Dawgs managed to rack up three regional and one sectional championship in 1A.
Winning has become the norm for the majority of Aquin’s varsity teams: the baseball team has won regionals in six of the last seven years, and has won sectionals the last two years. The boys basketball team has a regional championship in six of the last seven years, while the girls team has five regional titles and two state championships since 2009.
The volleyball team has back-to-back NUIC titles, while the football team has made the playoffs 16 times in 19 years."
Search begins for New Softball Coach
"Aquin’s softball program has been around since 2010, and has yet to experience any significant success. The Bulldogs wrapped up their eighth consecutive losing season last month . . . It took some time for the culture to change with the baseball program, which began in 2001 and didn’t have its first winning season until 2010 when the Bulldogs claimed their first conference title. They’ve since won regional titles in six of the past seven seasons."
Meet Benjy of SCY Ministry
"The Stateline Catholic Youth group and its new youth minister, Benjy Miller, have found a fun, unconventional way to tap into young minds at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Freeport.
Miller, 22, performed a “rap” rendition of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit to a group of middle school students in a video that has gathered more than 600 views in its first three days on Facebook."
