January 2017 - Issue 5

Happy New Year!

Welcome back! We are so excited to see our students once again. We hope you had an enjoyable winter break. I want to thank everyone who came out to see the holiday program. It was AMAZING!!! Our students worked so hard to give you a great performance. A special thanks to our specialist teachers for putting the program together.

Our first semester is coming to a close. It ends on January 20th. Winter keeps getting colder. Just a reminder to send your student(s) with a labeled coat, hat, mitten/gloves. If you need support with this please contact Laura or Seiquayia at ext. 2501. Also remember to check the lost in found if your child has lost a piece of clothing.

Our focus for this month is on reteaching expectations to our students. What it is to show PAW PRIDE throughout our building. Students will be talking about what it looks like to be respectful, responsible and safe during morning meeting.

Thank you for all you do for your child(ren) here at Myers-Wilkins. We appreciate your support. I am super excited to kick off the second part of the school year.

When are Winter Parent Teacher Conferences?

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, February 2nd and Tuesday, February 7th from 2:30-7:30 p.m. You will receive conference time confirmation from your childs' teacher within the next couple of weeks. It is critical you partake in your child's conference. WE look forward to seeing your family.

Report Cards

The end of the first semester is January 20th. There is no school on this day. This year report cards will be distributed to you on parent teacher conferences on the date/time you are scheduled. If you are not able to make it you should make sure to connect with the classroom teacher to schedule a time that will work for you.

What is our PBIS focus for January?

The holiday break flew by and we are already back in the swing of things here at Myers-Wilkins. Classroom teachers are working on reviewing the school-wide rules and expectations for each area in our school- long breaks sometimes means things get forgotten. Our school-wide rules are in place so that students and staff can be successful and respectful to one another and to make sure that learning is taking place.

At Myers-Wilkins, students engage in something called a “Morning Meeting” each day when they arrive to school. Morning Meeting can be led by the teacher or by a student. The Morning Meeting consists of four parts: greeting, sharing, activity, and news/announcements. The purpose of the Morning Meeting is to give students a “soft landing” in the morning. We want to set the tone for the day in a positive way and make sure students are aware- ahead of time- all that they will be doing for the day. Morning Meeting works to build relationships between teacher and student and from student to student.

Although the activities done during Morning Meeting can change each day, the four parts remain consistent. In this way, students come to know what is expected of them as a part of their classroom community. This is a time where social skills are taught and problems can be proactively discussed. Morning Meeting is just one small example of what makes Myers-Wilkins so great!

Parent Student Advisory Council

Myers-Wilkins has a very active and inclusive parent group. The meetings will be held on the second Tuesday of each month. There will be a snack and childcare provided. Mark your calendars!!! Our fourth PSAC meeting will be on January 10th. We would like as many parents as possible to be a part of this group. We will have a set agenda. The PSAC meeting will be from 5:15-6:30 p.m. in the media center. If you are not able to come to the meeting we are looking for volunteers in our building. Please stop by the office or give us a call and we can connect you to help out and be active here at Myers-Wilkins. We look forward to seeing you there!
