December
12/1/19
Hello Roadrunner Families,
I hope that our students are returning from the Thanksgiving break rested and ready for a month full of learning in December. As students return to school, we will begin the winter administration of the MAP assessment for students in grades 1-5. Teachers will use information from this assessment to guide their instruction in the classroom. Results from the MAP assessment will be available to parents in ParentVue shortly after the test is taken. If you have any questions about the MAP assessment or your child's specific test schedule, please reach out to your child's teacher for further information.
Our PTA will be holding a GLO Dance on December 6th in the school's multi-purpose room. We hope that you are able to join us for an evening of family fun and dancing with your children. Please check out the information that was sent home by the PTA if you are interested in attending. Please remember that students must be accompanied by an adult. We will also be holding our Family Coffee on internet safety on December 11th at 1:30pm. We hope that you can join us for this informative event!
December is a short month, as winter break begins on December 23rd and ends on January 6th. Please remember that it is important for your child to attend school each day on time. If you know that your child will be missing school for a trip, please notify the front office. Also, when your child is sick, please remember to call our absentee line to let us know.
Thank you for your partnership.
Sincerely,
Ms. Sacco

December Physical Education Newsletter
Circuit Training
Classes in K-5 have used the App “Seconds Pro” since the beginning of the school year. In December, students will participate in a variety of circuits that will help them to improve upon all five components of fitness (cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition). The goal will also be trying to identify a pattern and/or purpose of each circuit posted. Essentially, this application uses a timer that indicates the current interval and exercise will be stressed next.
Nutrition Continues
Do you know the names of all five of the food groups? Can you list at least two foods for each food group? Students have been active in class while learning about foods that belong in all of these groups. Fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods and dairy products are considered “everyday” foods that we should all eat. We’ll continue to learn about the foods that belong in each food group as we participate in several active games in December.
Mindfulness
All Rolling Ridge students have been practicing mindfulness during physical education lessons this year. Many of the “mini lessons” take place at the beginning and at the end of classes to improve focus and concentration. It really has translated to having better transitions to and from classes. We’ll continue to perform basic yoga poses and add additional poses each month. In December, mini lessons will include relaxation and breathing techniques. Our hope is that students will practice yoga poses and breathing techniques when times get frustrating or stressful. In a world where things move so quickly it’s helpful to take the time to decompress and be fully present.

Counseling Corner
Happy December Roadrunner Families! Mrs. Huey and Mrs. Abuasi-Eqab are so excited to continue working with students through different school counseling lessons, small group counseling and individual counseling sessions. During the month of December, students will be exploring mindfulness. Mindfulness has students aware of their surroundings and the ability to focus on themselves. The students will be exploring different strategies of mindfulness and become more self-aware.
During winter break, make sure to maintain a daily schedule filled with fun activities for your children. It is important that students are still reading and working on math facts throughout the break. Please also spend time with loved ones and enjoying the time off together.
Mrs. Abuasi-Eqab and Mrs. Huey are available to meet with students for individual and small group counseling. They can help students with a variety of social-emotional issues as well as teach students strategies to be the best person they can be.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call us at 571-434-4542 or email at haneen.abuasieqab@lcps.org or morgan.huey@lcps.org. We look forward to a great year!

Music Notes
As the end of 2019 is approaching, students in all grades are preparing for the Holiday Sing Along! This is an annual event at Rolling Ridge where we gather together to sing songs about winter, Christmas, Diwali, Eid, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, and Ramadan. The Holiday Sing Along will take place on Friday, December 20 at 1:15 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. While parents are always welcome at school events, please be aware that the sing along is a full school event and space will be limited.
Students in 4th grade will begin playing recorders as soon as the recorders are delivered to the school. Parents: please look for more information coming home with 4th grade students during the month of December.
Please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Cooper jennifer.a.cooper@lcps.org, or Mr. Holmes ronald.holmes@lcps.org with any questions.
