The Red Cross
The American Red Cross is dedicated to help people who is in need throughout the U.S. The Red Cross introduced its first aid, water safety, and public health nursing programs during WWI.
Clara Barton Bio
Clara Barton was born on December 25, 1821, in Oxford, Massachusetts. She was a shy child, but she had desire to help people at any cost. Clara Barton had became a teacher at 15 years old and later opened a free public school in New Jersey.
Clara Barton's Involvement of the Civil War
Clara Barton was one of the first volunteers to appear at the Washington Infirmary to care for wounded soldiers. Soon after her father's death, she left the city to go among the soldiers in the field.
Nursing Wounded Soldiers
Clara served as an independent nurse and cared for soldiers at Antietam.
American Red Cross
The society was founded in 1881 and Clara Barton served as its first president. She oversaw assistance and relief work for the victims of disasters such as the 1889 Johnstown Flood and the 1900 Galveston Flood.
Angel of the Battlefield
Clara Barton collected and distributed supplies for the Union Army. She first saw combat in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1862.
