Parent and Student Tips for STAAR
- Do make sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before the test. Phones and other mobile devices can keep kids from getting the necessary rest needed to be successful!
- Do something fun the night before to take their mind off the test (see a movie, play a board game, participate in a sport activity). That way their mind and emotions are more relaxed in the time leading up to the test.
- Do emphasize that test scores do not determine a person’s worth. Remind them that test scores are not perfect measures of what they can achieve. Simply encourage them to do their best!
- Do wake up early and in plenty of time so your child won’t feel rushed the morning of the test.
- Do remind your child to dress in comfortable clothing (but follow the dress code!). Bring a sweater or jacket to accommodate for temperature fluctuations.
- Do make sure your child eats a hearty breakfast. The brain needs a lot of energy to maintain focus on a big test for several hours!
- Do make sure that if you send a snack with your child that it is a healthy snack and a bottle of water.
- Do ensure that your child arrives at school on time and is relaxed. Children should come to school on STAAR days.

ATTENTION Incoming 7th grade parents
By state law, all incoming 7th grade students must have a meningococcal vaccination and a Tdap vaccination prior to the first day of school. If students do not have record of both of these vaccinations on the first day of their 7th grade year they will not be allowed to start school until this record is received. If your student already has these vaccinations please send an updated vaccination record to the nurse ASAP. If your student arrives at Lockhart Junior High on the first day of 7th grade next year, 2018-2019, and does not have these shots on record they will be dropped from their classes and will be re-enrolled once we receive an updated shot record. The student may lose their spots in any elective classes that they picked. It is very important that this matter is handled very quickly.
If you have any questions please feel free to call the nurse at 512-398-0782.
