WHAT'S NEW? (March th, 2016)

Hi Families,

On Wednesday afternoon, we went to the Junior High to watch the dress rehearsal of Alice in Wonderland, Jr. The performance was fantastic and the 5th graders enjoyed getting to watch the show! It was great to see many former Greenbriar students involved with the production.

A special thank you to the Art Adventure mom's, Mrs. Casey, Mrs. Gallinson, and Mrs. Nielsen, for teaching the students about Jazz Music and the African American Artist. They were inspired by the music and created beautiful collage pieces using construction paper, magazines, scrapbook paper, and tissue paper.

The students recorded a short video clip and sent it to Scott Kelly to congratulate him on his journey in space. We are hoping to hear from him soon!

We will have new Spelling and Vocabulary words next week.

Read below to see what else has been going on in Room 201.

Enjoy your weekend,
Mrs. Sanchez and Mrs. Mirza

P.S. We are currently out of glue sticks. Please send 1 or 2 sticks with your child by next week. Thanks so much!

Math

This week in Math, the students started on Chapter 11: Graphs and Probability. They worked on how to make and interpret a double bar graph from two given sets of data. The students were introduced to making a line plot to represent data given in fractions of a unit. They will use operations on fractions to solve the problems from the information presented. We will continue working on line plots and begin graphing equations. I anticipate our test will be given at the end of next week.

Writer's Workshop

This week in Writer's Workshop, the students completed their persuasive essays and shared their pieces with the class. They were given time to free-write to get their creative minds working!

Reader's Workshop

We continued our Book Clubs this week. The students are participating in discussions within their group.

Science

This week in Science, the students watched half of the PBS Special of Scott Kelly's, "Year in Space". We will finish the rest on Monday.

The students will be working on a R.A.F.T. (Role, Audience, Format, Topic) Space project with a partner of their choice. Directions and the rubric will be coming home with your child today. Be sure to ask him/her about it. They will present their project on Wednesday, March 16th.

Second Step (Social Emotional Learning)

Mrs. Mowery's lesson this week was on Independent Behaviors: conformity and obedience. They enjoyed the lesson in the courtyard, while getting fresh air. They discussed the What's and the Why's/Why Not's of behaviors.

Student Council News

Next week, Student Council will be collecting donations for Socks of Love. A Sock of Love is a pair of socks that is filled with small necessities like toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc. We will donate all of the socks of love to a homeless shelter to help people in need. You can bring in filled socks Monday, March 14- Friday, March 18. Make sure to put your sock in the grade level box in the front hallway because the grade level with the most completed socks will win a prize! Help us help others!
