2 Hour Delay Days
Good Morning, Boone Meadow Families -

Additional notes and reminders:
- Please be careful! Our roads, sidewalks, bus stops, and roads may still be slick in spots!
- We will not have recess today. (You can leave snow gear at home)
- Students will have their regularly scheduled related arts classes, but they will be a shorter lesson (30 minutes).
- Lunch will be served at our regularly scheduled times.

Dear Boone Meadow Families
The Science Fair was a tremendous success this week. Thank you to all students/families that participated. We had a great turnout last night! A special thank you to Kara Benson and the judges that assisted. We want to thank IU, IU School of Medicine, Marian University, Corteva, Zionsville Parks Department, and Abbvie Pharmaceutical for allowing these smart, talented, and insightful volunteers the opportunity to assist in our Science and Engineering Fair.
A few reminders and highlights:
- Kindergarten registration for the 23-24 school year will open up in early February. Keep your eyes open as registration will go live for the graduating class of 2036! BME will host our first of a series "Kindy Strong Start" event (formerly known as Kindy Round Up) in the afternoon/evening of March 23rd for those registered families. More information and details to come soon.
- STEM Science & Engineering Fair was successful and engaging due the flexibility of the families, our volunteers, and Mrs. Benson. Closed campuses on Wednesday required last minute adjustments to schedules and set up. Students stepped up and engaged in presentation of their projects to knowledgeable judges, students, and families. Bravo to those that stepped up, took a risk, and gave their best effort to share their process of learning with others.
- PTO Family Movie Night - Next Friday evening, February 3, BME PTO will host and indoor movie night for our students and families. The event is free and begins at 7:00 (doors open at 6:30). The event will be hosted in the gym, and families are welcome to bring blankets/pillows or other soft items to create a comfy spot. To protect the gym floor, we ask that no outside chairs be brought in for use. We will have some chairs available for use.
- Global School Play Day is coming. On February 1st, BME will join over 1 million children around the world in this day of creative play. Keep your eyes open for information from your child's teacher.
Enjoy your weekend,
ParentSquare Notification Settings..
ParentSquare is continually applying system updates to enhance individual communication experiences and offer customized options for receiving messages.
We highly recommend checking your individual ParentSquare settings to ensure you have selected to receive messages that align with your preference in consuming information. You can elect to receive messages instantly or you can choose to put them on a daily digest.
In the event of emergencies, including school closings and delays due to weather, the sender will attempt to override your individual settings to ensure you receive information instantly.
In a recent ParentSquare update, some individual settings were adjusted based on individual user consumption activity.
It is important to check your individual ParentSquare settings to be sure you are receiving the communication you desire on the timeline that you prefer.
This ParentSquare tutorial will guide you through accessing and selecting your individual ParentSquare message settings. If you have any questions, please contact ZCS technology to walk you through this process.
For current 4th grade families...
Global School Play Day is Next Wednesday, February 1st
Next Wednesday, February 1, 2023, Boone Meadow will once again participate in Global School Play Day. This day will provide us the opportunity to:
- observe and interact with students as they engage in authentic social exchanges,
- use this time to witness how your children navigate peer relationships,
- expand our understanding of your child as a person that has academic, social, and emotional aspects of their well-being,
- witness how they interact, show empathy, assist one another, problem-solve, and create
- glean more insight and information in order to provide more feedback to you (parents/guardians) that we are often unable to provide from our typical school day programming.
Simply put, Global School Play Day started in 2015 with the intent to set aside one day (or portion of the day) for students to engage in unstructured play. It is an opportunity to introduce and inspire us to consider the necessary benefits of play.
Play has significant psychological and cognitive impact on children.
- develops physical fitness,
- refines physical (gross motor and fine motor) skills,
- provides practice for social and emotion development (requires cooperation, problem-solving, work in close proximity, requires emotional regulation, etc...)
- at times requires high levels of strategic thinking,
- and assists in developing skills to navigate risk and fear.
In other words, play can be considered the "work" of children.

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)
The CogAT is a multiple-choice assessment administered to students in kindergarten and second grade. This is a computer-based assessment that measures reasoning skills with different types of verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal questions. The CogAT uses two types of norms when tests are scored: age norms, and grade norms. Age norms compare how a student performed relative to other children of the same age, and grade norms compare how a student performed relative to the other children in the same grade. After scoring has been completed each parent will receive a parent report. For more information, please contact your child’s school counselor.
BME kindergarten and 2nd grade students will be taking the assessment during the weeks of January 30th - February 10th.
For more information about the CogAT assessment, please visit our website at this link.
Indiana weather is known for its rapid changes and we have certainly already seen that this year! As the weather turns colder, students will need to come to school with their winter coats, hats, and gloves. Snow pants, waterproof boots, warm gloves/mittens are required to be able to play in the snow. Please reach out to our counselor, Mrs. Sloan, if you are in need of assistance to obtain cold weather gear. All children play outside except on rainy, icy, or very cold days (wind chill below the 10-20 degree range). Inside recess will be held on those exceptional days.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS
We value partnerships with our families and welcome parents and guardians to serve as volunteers in our schools. Each ZCS building typically offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. If you plan to assist as chaperones or engage with children in a volunteer capacity, we strongly recommend getting a criminal background check completed well in advance to have on file.

- Out of Town/Overnight Chaperones
- Volunteer Coaches
- Classroom Helpers (PTO parties/room parents)
- Library Helpers
- After Prom Workers
- Field Day/Jog-A-Thon Volunteers

Volunteers must also view the state mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS
During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times.
