News from Lions Park School
Letter from the Principal
Dear Lions Park Families,
We are excited to celebrate Kindness/Anti-Bullying Week at Lions Park next week. Below is the list of what students can wear during the week to raise awareness of the messages. As part of this week, we will be helping students focus on being kind to one another. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a photo booth activity where they will have their picture taken as they hold a sign that has a positive message written on it. Students will write kind messages on post-its to be distributed to other classes, so that each child will receive a caring message. We will do a chalk activity outside the school where we will attempt to line our sidewalks and bus turnaround with positive messages. One day students will go to all different rooms in the school with students from other grades to hear a teacher read a book with messages of acceptance, kindness and friendship. In addition, there will be brief videos shown in the lunchroom and students will be having classroom discussions.
This week may be a good time to talk with your child about his or her treatment of others at school or in other places. Furthermore, it is an opportunity to talk about bullying. It is important that all in our school community understand what bullying behavior looks like. Teachers will tell students that bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself. We will also talk about the difference between rude behavior, mean behavior and bullying behavior. Rude behavior is accidentally saying or doing something that hurts someone else. Mean behavior is purposefully saying or doing something to hurt someone once or twice. Bullying behavior is intentionally aggressive behavior repeated over time. While none of these behaviors are acceptable and all need to be addressed, it is helpful if we all use the same language when describing negative behaviors.
We want Lions Park School to be a place where all students feel welcome, comfortable and accepted. Our role is to teach students the skills and strategies they need to treat others with respect and to stand up to others who are not demonstrating positive behaviors. If there is ever a particular situation you would like us to discuss with your child, please reach out to us.
Warmly,
Katie Kelly
Parents, please attend the next PTO meeting to hear an important, brief presentation by Dr. Aumiller.
