Updates from the Building
Dive Into Reading - Our building wide reading incentive is getting more and more kids excited to read. At our last count we are approaching 3,000 points as a building! We are nearly a third of the way to reaching our 10,000 point goal!
Here are the grade level totals as of December:
K & 1st - 300 points
2nd - 800 points
3rd - 300 points
4th - 800 points
5th - 400 points
Family Math Night - We are looking forward to a night of fun on January 14th. Families are invited to join us for this no cost event. Bring your favorite board game or borrow one of ours. We will also have a station where you can try out and learn more about our makerspace that is in the works!
Makerspace - What is a makerspace? A space where children are given the time, space and materials to make, create and solve problems. Our Shared Decision Making Team is working to repurpose an old locker room for our very own makerspace. We have applied for a grant to purchase the materials needed to jumpstart this movement in our building! Soon we will be offering a training for parents and staff that are interested in volunteering or learning more about how we can cultivate the maker mindset at Geyser Road!
Project Lead the Way - All of our classroom teachers have been trained is this hands on STEM programming that we are introducing to our students. Beginning in January, students in grades K-5 will have the opportunity to work through various modules that focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematical principles, while also fostering collaboration and problem solving. We are looking forward to sharing what the students create!
Did you know? Students in grades 3-5 have shown improvement annually over the past three years. In 2012, Geyser Road’s state percentile was 75.9 percent. In 2013, the school reached 82 percent, and in 2015, the figure was 84.8 percent. Way to go!
Meet our New Custodians - Mr. Gerry Weatherwax is our new head custodian and Mr. Wayne Stanton is joining him on the day shift. We are excited to have them both on our team!
Winter Carnival 2016 - We are going to soon be doing the "snow dance" to prepare for our Winter Carnival on Saturday, January 23rd starting at 5PM. This year we are planning a special event to celebrate all of the hard work our students have been doing. Cozy PJs are encouraged! We hope to have as little something for everyone, including:
- Moonlight Snowshoeing and Cross Country Skiing
- Snow Sculptures
- Grilled Hot Dogs
-Cocoa by the Fire
-Favorite Book Projects Displayed in the Gym
-Cozy Spots for Families to Read
If you are interested in helping to plan this event please be sure to attend our next PTO meeting on January 11th at 6:30 PM.
